Hey! ....I've got my daughter studying Law over there at Cave Hill. When I visit maybe we'll hook-up!
Is there an active R/C heli club over there? Maybe i'll bring a heli with me next time

Wrong. Bobby had a similar wrench to his "Grippy" since I first met him years ago which was just a bare 6" aluminum tubing with a one-way pressed into the end. Originally, it was Bobby's friend from Maryland (I think) that made it for him well before your "Cletus Wrench" was thought of.

Again, Bobby didn't copy you. His version was around for far longer than yours. Not to mention, the idea in itself has been around years before even Bobby had his one-way wrench when we first met. There's just nothing new about pressing a one-way into the end of an aluminum bar; only thing new is that Bobby decided to start selling them just as you have.

I made this a few years ago using a Hirobo glow plug wrench. Someone at RR mentioned about using oneway bearing as spindle tool and that's where I I saw it and made one.

Plagiarism is alive and well out in this big world out there.......

That's why I wouldn't bother to patent anything, keep it quite, build a bunch, sell em and be done with it. If you truly have the best design then it will remain the favorite for some time to come.

Regarding this tool: What I would want in a device like this is more than one size in the wrench, 4 different sizes would be thee big seller and only offer the singles to those that don't want to kick down for the all in one 4 size dealie.

I like the Cletus better because of the multiple size configuration.

Bravo guys!

Now, I wouldn't throw the p word around just yet. I mean, things can be invented independently almost simultaneously without the inventors coming into contact. So lets just chill with that and evaluate them based on their merits.
(That being said, I'll personally just go with the one that has the patents and stuff.)

The Cletus does look better to me, with the multiple sizes and replaceable owb. I mean, think about it. You could buy owbs with the correct diameters for your birds, and easily fit them into the cletus, instead of having to buy several grippy wrenches.
Besides, Cletus Wrench is a fantastic sounding name. It rings of an epic all purpose manly tool(wait...).

not to take anything away from anyone. I've been using oneway bearing style mini rachets in different styles in the automotive trade for longer than i care to remember for use on replaceble driver bits for tight to reach spaces. Also for holding precison shafts during bearing removal

Terrific to see both the Cletus and Watts ones bringing easier and more precise maintance tools to the attention of the heli guys.

As far as patents go,, i'd say you'd have to do a long search back to see if any device that uses a OWB to hold a shaft has been lodged. Snap-on, ABW,stahlwille,MAC, amongst others all carry similiar devices. Look very similiar to the pics that benben posted

Wishing every success to all the inventors. Without them, we'd still be pushing square rocks down a hill

I wouldn't mind having a few grippys to take to events, but I allready have a foolproof system I use at home.

This is an interesting type of tool, but how useful is it really? Just for feathering shafts? Couldn't you just use vice grips for a bent feathering shaft and not worry about marking it up? I'm a noob, so be gentle.

I did find one site that has a "one-way bearing glow plug ratchet wrench" that looks basically like the Grippy tool.

http://www.leisuretech.ca/catalog/pa...ing_tools.html

The Cletus wrench does seem to have added utility. Whether the one-way bearing part of the tool is patentable, having the bearing being replaceable and the hex wrench end may be patentable improvements to such a tool. But, I am no patent attorney...

There's more to proper maintenance than fixing it after a crash. Replacing dampeners when there worn & re greasing the thrust bearings doesnt have to include replacing the spindle because we ruined it getting the head apart.

This will for sure be a plus to the tool collection!

A long time ago, on this forum, someone suggested using a drill chuck for this purpose.

I keep a spare drill chuck in my tool box and it works extremely well to remove the second bolt from the spindle.
