New motor for the Faifa
The 4235-520 Nick Maxwell is a great fit for the Kasama Faifa, no spacers, just drops straight-in...

That looks great. The 45xx or P750 sizes are not ideal. What did you have in there before and how does it compare?

I've got a 4525-520 in my other Faifa and that's got spacers on the elevator servo and bar mount... combined with a nice scratch on the motor can
I think the Faifa really comes alive with a bit more power though

New motor for the Faifa
I also have the spaced and scratched 4525 in mine, perfect power for the Faifa.

Managed to get a couple of flights with the Scorpion 120A SBEC ESC and 4235-520 motor.
It's definitely a powerful combination and the governor holds well with a slight tweak of the gains. Yes, the cabling needs tidying... just keen to try the new motor and ESC!

Hi,
I have this motor for my Faifa that I am just starting to build. Did you have to extend the flat further down the motor shaft? I started putting it together last night, and it looked like that was going to be necessary, but it was late, I was tired, and it was the last thing I looked at before going to bed. Andrew

Hi Andrew,
Yes, I seem to remember with both 4525 and 4235 Scorpion motors I had to extend the spindle flats. Paul

Thanks Paul,
It is something I have never done before, this is the first electric I have owned larger than a 500. I will research a few videos before I attempt it. Andrew

The main thing is to cover the motor so no metal dust or filings can get inside or in the bearings. I recently had to bring a flat spot up a bit on an Align 750MX. I just put a plastic bag over the motor with the shaft poking through and with a small grinding wheel on my rototool thingy (cheap Dremel wannabe) it was done suprisingly fast. Don't grind more than you need, just enough for the grub screw to have a divet or flat surface to grab onto.

Thanks. I diid a little Google searching and the metal dust issue came up. It is something I would definitely have overlooked.
I am also worried about taking too much off. It is one of those jobs I really don't like having to do.

Yeah in an ideal world all motors would just have a flat strip that runs the whole length of the shaft to fit any pinion you want. I did have a motor like that but I don't remember now what it was.

Yep, that would be a much better idea... think the Xera motor I've got is like that, isn't the Pyro the same?

I've dealt with a lot of motors recently because I swapped around motors on several helis, sold some, bought some more. Which reminds me, I have a 700MX/470 on the Dune now and I don't think I have flown it with that motor yet. I'm sure it will be fine though.

470kv should give you long flight times!
I chatted with Mr Kasama this week and he likes his Dune at 1,200rpm... not sure how impressed he was when I mentioned I've been running my Dune Speed at 2,400rpm with 14° pitch :-)

Flight times must be insane! Although, I can imagine that at 2400 the rocket-sled raw speed is bound to be a lot of fun.

I now have a lower KV motor for my Faifa. This is a Hacker Turnado that I originally put in the Triabolo in its stock form at 470KV and it worked really well but started to get very hot in the enclosed Triabolo canopy when the weather warmed up.
It has been rewound with single strand wire and is supposed to be between 410 and 420KV. This will put the Faifa at somewhere around 1450 at 63% throttle (Jive mode 4). This is just ever so slighter higher than the TDR is currently geared. So it should be a low headspeed monster now :-) I'll install the motor tomorrow but no idea when I'll get to try it as the forecast is looking pretty grim at the moment.

Sounds great! Who did the re-wind for you?
Going completely in the opposite direction, I've swapped the Dune Speed motor from a 450kv to a 500kv, so 2,500+ is possible. Though it sounds like the Kasama tail ratio might be too high for that and will have to look into a smaller custom crown gear. I was flying my Faifa 800 on 12s yesterday morning, which is amazing, but I prefer the lower headspeed flying, just seems to suit the big heli more. It must be a candidate for efficient flying. If I was going to always run low headspeed with the 800 I could also go much lighter, as it's currently got a Kosmik and 4530 motor... floaty light. I tried a few autos, but not to land, as the space wasn't big enough and it really does float down :-)

Last time I took the Faifa out I was flying at 51% throttle for my idle-1 and that is below Mr Mels calculator but should be around 1420. So with the new motor it will be around 60% to get that headspeed and 50-51% will be around 1300. This gives it a useable range from 1200 ish up to about 1600 with something like 1450 being right in the governor sweet-spot. On my last couple flights with the TDR I was flying almost the entire time at just over 1300 and finding that very comfortable so I'm fully expecting the Faifa to do just as well. I tried to get a pic of the motor but it's so dark here at the moment :-(

From what I can see it looks like a good rewind. I've rewound a few smaller motors before, but tempted to have a go with a 700 size motor. What termination is it now?
