Default Nitro cooling

Hi folks, about ready to get a fuselage for my trex 600 nitro, got my eye on the hughes 500. My question is do you have to cut cooling inlet and exhaust holes in the fuse. Do they run noticibly hotter in a fuselage?

Thanks!

If you dont get cool fresh air in and get the hot air out, you will have issues.

Typically, you cut a hole in the bottom of the fuse under the fan shroud to allow the hot air out. And leave a couple of the side windows out to allow the cool fresh air in. Also be aware of the proximity of the muffler to the fuse. If not enough clearance, you can burn the paint or worse, start melting the resins out of the fiberglass. Heat shield material can be used to help with this.

With the Hughes 500, you probably picked the best fuse possible to put a nitro in with as few problems as possible.

Enjoy the build and post some pics!

The Funkey Fuse has a vent hole on the bottom and a silicone hose to port the exhaust out the butt.

Thanks for the information! Looking at the rc aerodyne hughes 500D. 600 size of course. I had a spare 4 blade head from one of my other birds and already have that mounted to the mechanics.

hmmm not to rain on your parade but Hughes 500 has a 5 blade head...
with that out of my system... it sure can be done
as the guys mentioned previously just cut a hole under the engine... and put a metal mesh over the hole. This will obscure it in some way and still provide the cooling/ventilation. With the Hughes 500 you can either leave the rear windows off... or put the steel mesh over those holes too.

Steel mesh is great as you can shape it in any form, it is failry easy to paint... and it does not melt. Also as Steve mentioned... take care of the exhaust as well, some isolation in the tight spot between the muffler and the fuselage will come handy

Yep, fully aware they have a 5 blade head. But 4 is closer than 2 ....used to use this head on an aerobatic bird but its been looking for a home for 2 years so this should suit nicely. I'll do the metal mesh for cooling. Not shooting for super scale here. Maybe put a light kit in it eventually. As soon as rotor blades arrive I've got to do a little flight adjustment to it and she'll be ready for the fuse. The 4 blade head produces a TON of lift and best of all NO FBL contoller required for it.I'll post pics when the fuse shows up and I get a start on it.

Very well in fact.....its all magic to me, but hovering you'd never know the difference and in FF it has a little roll coupling that you have to compensate for. I suppose if you played with the swash timing you could eliminate it but I've always left the timing at zero. I'll try to get a video up soon. You can read more at www.audacitymodels.com look under helicopter accesories and you'll see their quattro head....
