I agree that I was too aggressive, and lazy from all the excess power I normally have, but I'll have to work up the nerve to try it at 2400rpm. I believe you, but will have to work on doing more gentle maneuvers.

Have you had any luck simulating LHS by reducing head speed in the simulator?

I wish there was an Oxy 3 in Realflight. The only one I have is a unfinished beta if I can find it again on my old PC that died. The editing in that sim is so much better than others.

I spent an hour or so last night flying the goblin 700 at 900rpm in the neXt Sim. It felt a lot like the Oxy did at 2400rpm in terms of collective power. I was able to flip and roll it fine, but it was very easy to crash it doing the half Piro flip transition I like to use to go inverted, which is how I crashed the Oxy. I wish I'd done that little bit of training before my last flight.

I don't like to fly small models in the Sim, but I might try the Oxy I have for heli-x and see if it is accurate at LHS.

Sorry for the crash, George. It didn't seem too bad to me, was surprised at the amount of damage.

Nice to see the Oxy can go down that low and be used in scale applications or for someone not accustomed to the "normal" range people run at. I have run mine down to 2500 (stretch), but I didn't like it at all. If Lynx made a 16t maybe that would cure the lack of tail authority.

I'm surprised too. I know I didn't hit throttle hold in time as I was trying to save it, but even so at that low head speed I'm surprised the motor shaft broke, especially since the main gear stripped. Maybe I damaged the shaft in an earlier crash? I hope I can get it together for Saturday morning as we're going to have a nice morning, followed by an arctic blast that takes our temps the coldest they've been in a couple years down here. It'd be nice to get a flight in before we take a break. I've never changed a motor shaft so it'll be new for me.

I hear the shaft is pretty simple. I have never replaced one either, but have a spare just in case.

Hey - I am impressed either way - Just lookjed at the video a few times and I am personally hooked for extreme low rpm for at least 2 years now. My 500 I bring down to about 1050rpm flying it inverted (as there is a video somewhere) the larger machines I fly at about 800/850 rpm regular slow motion 3d routine.

Can you practice on a sim - yes at least on the Heli-X that I use it works rather well. Still real world is a bit different. But whats cool for me on the SIM - I actually have headspeed down to what I run in real. I do not adjust the tail gain settings on the SIM to much so I want to have it kick out on me in order to learn ow to respond to it. It helps me stay calm when it happens in real.

In your case it looks very much like collective a bit aggressive (cyclic is ok to move quick but if its to extreme it requires extreme collective and thats what is killing you). The first trials with a newer machine or with something where I am not sure about I always do at higher altitude so I get a chance to go to higher headspeed and recover. Thats where the first mistake was. When you do it next time -> go three times as high as you have been on the video and try to get a feel. Also colelctive was a bit much so your tail broke out and you did not get it fully around.

Also -> forward flips are easiest to start with and seem to require less critical collective management. What I do at start with new machines is to give it positive collective while pulling the nose up a bit and now - when its in upwards movement I push elevator forward slow until nose is down. At that time I bring collective pitch to almost zero. I now try to have it hang there for a fraction of a second and start moving collective to negative while push nose forward again (not to aggressive). I try to do it slow motion to actually o with the flow and catch the machine slowly. That way if tail authority is not to good due to low rpm I am able to keep the forces low and therefore headspeed more constant which makes the tail stay in the position where it was.
It takes some practice and even at higher rpm you can practice slow motion flips. Once you do that maneuver you start adding backward flips, rolls, piro flips ... It is kind of cool - at least to me.

I've been flying quite a bit of low head speed in the simulator to be ready to try the oxy low head speed again. Finally today got it back in the air after replacing the motor shaft from that last crash. I set the 3 flight modes to be 2600, 3400 and 4000 RPM. The video is about a minute in each mode, the lowest being the last minute. I did get it inverted at that lowest speed but it took so long to work up the nerve I didn't have time to fly it much. Next time I fly it I'll try more at the lower head speed.

oxy3 3 head speeds (4 min 0 sec)

Would carbon blades help with the lhs, thinking the Lynx plastics are flexing too much?

Probably, I've wondered that too. I have a set of carbon plastics I can try, but will have to buy a set of carbons to give them a test. I frankly have been waiting to crash and bend the boom so I can order the stretch kit and go back to carbons in the longer size. Since making that decision my boom has been bend-proof and my plastic blades have been indestructible. It's been flying so well with the 255s that I put the stretch plan on the back burner.

Nice flying! Once you get more comfortable at 2600, it will be fun to see tic tocs!

I think the "stretch it after you break it" approach makes a lot of sense. I like the Zeal 285s but, honestly, I have nothing else to compare to as I'm still flying the original set. Several folks who've compared plastic vs. CF on the stretch have had a strong preference for CF. I haven't heard anyone chime in the other way yet...

I don't know about tic tocs; at 3400 rpm they are anemic on the oxy. I'm not sure there's enough collective power to do a tic toc at 2600.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, just thought I'd add my experience to a thread i found very informative and helpful when setting up my heli.

Just set my Oxy 3 TE up for 2400/2600/2800 RPM on 4S with a 10T pinion and 14T tail. AUW 725g.

Find myself flying at 2400 more often than not. More than enough power for sport.

I fly with the timer set to 5 min and come down with over 60% left on the battery. Not sure how much the freewheel on my V4 60A is helping.
