In order to fit it I would have to cut the plastic standoffs. I'm not willing to do this as I think it would weaken the frame.

Plan B is to go with a higher RPM motor so I don't have to use larger pinions.
I'm going ahead with the Hyperion HS3026 1210kV motor.
You should have enough headspeed with the 1050kV and a 16T pinion - I would try that and see how it goes

Because of the motor size i'm limited to using 60T front gear. Else the motor would touch the frame at the bell crank mounts. Max headspeed I get with 16T pinion is 1988rpm.
I'm using 425 blades. So it might be too less right?

It might work out with 18T pinion though. As the pinion has larger diameter I might not have to file a lot of the frame.

Stark, I'm using the turnigy nanotech 2650s and to be honest its been so long since I did my gearing that I can't be certain but here goes.....14.60.19.61. I'll check and amend if necessary....TC is a flat 100%

Cheers
Nick

Unfortunately the 22T pinion does not fit inside the plastic frame. Instead of that, I'm going to give the 18T pinion with 50T front gear a try. But till the 18T pinion arrives I'm using 16T pinion with 60T Front gear.

The legend in Flybarred helis.

I have soldered an EC5 connector to the ESC. To see how to solder this connector see this post Soldering EC5

I tried to program the ESC with the 2-in-1 advanced program box. Everything was fine till I initiated a firmware upgrade of the ESC using Hobbywing's USB Link software. The firmware upgrade failed saying "communication error" and the ESC died. Now I'm no longer able to use the program box or the ESC or USB link software. The ESC was the only place I skimped and it has let me down.

Do yourself a favour. Don't buy this Hobbywing and other cheap chinese crap.

For now I will use the Phoenix ICE 75A from my Atom.

...Sorry you had trouble with the Hobbywing ESC...
I run an 80a Platinum Pro on my 550 and a 100a on my mid boom 500...
Set them up using the cheap programer and have been trouble free for nearly a year.

I know the hardware is not really dead. It is just missing the firmware since the last firmware update was interrupted due to some reason. Hobbywing needs to improve it's software so that users don't face such problems.

I'm discussing the issue with their customer support. But they are quite slow. Not much progress so far.

Before you start to mount your servos, get a set of servo plates! Makes life very easy and firmly mounts the servos in place.

I got red ones to match my wire braiding. They look realy nice on my heli.

sp00fman,

thanks for the tip. The servos came with rubber mounting pads and washers. I have already mounted the servos using them. They are a pretty good fit. Will post some pictures.

Default Mounting the electronics

Mounted the aileron and pitch servos with servo horns.

I used the big servo wheel that comes with the Hyperion tail servo. Since I have 2 of them (one for my Atom) I used them one on each side.
Custom drilled the holes on them by using one of the bell cranks as a template.

You can see how big the motor is. I had to use additional bearings, one on each side to push the bell cranks away from the motor. Also used longer M3x14 screws.

bearings: G-204560
hex screw (M3x14)

For the elevator servo I used this heavy duty servo horn. This too came with the Hyperion tail servo. Custom drilled the holes for the ball links.

Tail servo on the boom to get perfect Center of Gravity with the 500g battery and the beefy motor.

What to say about mr. quark, I'm eager to see how he performs.

on go the mainblades. I used these turnigy blades. They came well balanced but I'm sure how they perform.

Finished the build with the stock canopy.

Thanks ! The motor has high regard in the compass community. It is a power horse.

I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of this heli build (except the canopy ). Sticking the 2 halves together needs lots of patience.

I'm now waiting for the 18T pinion to arrive and some good weather for maiden flight.

I think I would have tossed the plastic canopy in a drawer....

Hey, you may want to check around on the Quark...I've seen alot of people use the super thin foam instead. I used the thin stuff on my TREX450 and it worked great.

Default foam pad

I just followed the installation guide. On Page 7 (pg 9 in the pdf) it says "(Small electric helicopters (250, 450 and 500 size) – Use a single 3mm foam pad without the steel plate."

I will first try how it works with 3mm pad and then switch pads if there is any problem.

Have you thought about stiffening up the frame a bit? I placed a wood block just in front of the main shaft. I'm not sure its needed but i don't like to strip any gears by the flexing.

No I haven't thought about it. I'm only going to do sport flying initially. I suppose the flexing takes place at intensive maneuvers. That's a long way to go for me .

Default re-gearing

The 18T pinion arrived.

Perfect. The 18T pinion fits inside the plastic frame. With the 50T main gear it gives me.
2613 RPM --> (22.2 x 1050) / [ (61/19 x (50/18) ]

Since the motor comes closer to the spindle than before, I had to add another spacer bearing to prevent the bell cranks from touching the motor. I also had to shave off a bit ( 0.5 ~ 1 mm) of the plastic frame. You can see that it is very close to the motor, but doesn't touch.

One more thing. I moved one of the ball links to the inside of the bell crank so that the arm to the swash is straight.

...That is what I did to my 550 Plastic frame in preparations to put a 4020-910 motor on it...
did'nt do it though as it has too much power for the plastic frame...
...You might look at using longer Ball mounting screws and locknuts also...
