Micro sized camera?
I'm contemplating mounting a video camera on a scale helicopter (600 size AS350) that looks like the under-slung cameras used by full sized machines. So the lens+sensor would need to be very small (say 1/2 inch cube) and have wires going into the cabin for the recording electronics. I'd pack out the sensor module to look like the scale shape and size. There seem to be many micro "spy" cameras on the market, but I'm not sure where to start, and whether there is an existing supply particularly used in this way.

Nice idea ...
As to your question: To start off, you'll need to know exactly what size the housing will be . Then if you want the housing to pan and tilt. From there, you can start to look at camera options. The nice thing is that most are quite affordable. Something in this type of configuration is around $27.00 USD

Thanks nightflyer. So, I have seen those small modules on websites. Mostly they seem intended to be wired to bulky recording units, or for FPV to small transmitters. I wouldn't want FPV. I don't think I'd want tilting and panning. So is there a link to a small on-board video recorder that those small 4-wire modules can be connected to? Thanks in advance, although this is just an idea so far.

But you can research here to see if anything suits you. https://www.google.com/search?q=FPV+...w=1576&bih=780 They are also All in one units that may suit your requirements.

Yes, an FPV system could be -off-the-shelf / Plug-n-play (I hope!). There's probably a litre of vacant space inside the cabin, and a few tens of grams extra weight wouldn't be a big deal. Looking at the FPV systems it seems they compromise on resolution and other aspects of image quality in order to avoid latency. Latency is not a problem if I'm not using the feed to fly the model. Just looking at the full-size image above I suspect the sensor module could be up to 30mm diameter. Of course, without tilting/panning or vibration stabilisation, it may be that the recording may not be very interesting anyway.

So a recorder like this in the cabin
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...PV_Drones.html wired to a camera like this mounted in suitable dummy shape http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._Version_.html ... would do the trick?
