Default Servo Upgrade

So has anyone upgraded servos yet?

I had a very mild blade strike in the dirt and stripped the flimsy plastic gear stock servo, so I ordered some Hitec HS5065MG replacements. I run Hitec in my giant scale 50cc Edge and love them!

I think I'll stick to stockers for a bit as people seem to say that no matter what servos you get, they will destroy gears in a crash.

And the DS76 stock are really good and precise servos but are weak in crashes.

Since you will end up replacing gears either way, i'm not sure I want to get 15$ sets of gears to replace in every crash.....

Time will tell... But stockers for me for now..

I had 5065's in my Blade 450 3D so I moved them over. The align ds410m's I had before stripped gears every crash. These 5065's have held up to 5 crashes so far with no gear strips, happy so far.

There are the lighter MKS 92A+'s now as well for cyclics. Or you can use MKS 92's out of spec. Cheaper MKS options.

Durabilitywise I cannot comment.

I only have a lot of experience crashing HS-65MG's and these are great. I have been told the MKS mg servos crash just as well, it's only a matter of time before I find out. My blade FBL is hitech (5065's,5084) but my protos mini MKS.

Thalios's suggestion of stockers has some merit and that's what I'll be doing with my 300X I guess whenver that comes. I'm going to have to import gears I suspect. MKS servos are great but I think on a heli like a 300X they may just weigh too much, we'll see. Maybe it won't be so bad. Maybe I'll need a new ESC as well, who knows.

On the 450X a similar argument could be made if absolute mass of heli is of great import.

I pay $30.99 per 5065. What'd you pay for whole set of HH servos and gears?

Gears may be cheap to replace, but after enough times I had enough. It's not just replacing the gears that's the PITA, but you have to go through your whole head setup all over again every time. No thanks!

rc....
VERY GOOD price on the 5065....
My LHS gets me 3 DS76's w/gears for $45....
So.....OK...it's more like "2-for-1".....
I've given a lot of thought to going with the 5065's....we'll see how the "stocks" hold up after my first few sessions at the club field....!
Happy Flying!

$45 for all that is quite good too.

Even at $31 a piece from my local guy that's still $93 for a set of Hitecs. Kind of tough to swallow initially, but worth it in my opinion. I doubt I'd spend the list price of $200 for a set though. With such drastically different prices out there Hitec must have lots of margin built in for thier dealers.

I believe MKS DS92A+'s are under 50 bucks a piece from places like hawk-rc et in hong kong FWIW.

Hard call upgrading anyways:

IF upgrading.... I don't have any idea if the stock ESC can cope with all MKS digital servos which would logically require more power (given the speed and torque), so personally I'd consider upgrading that as well plus you'll possibly get a governor as well.

Mass wise: I think DS92A+'s are about 15-17g a piece and the DS95i about 20 grammes. so you're looking at about 35 grammes extra thereabouts I believe, approximately, off the top of my head figures. Gotta run. @3123QeWE work and real life yet agian.

+1 Hitec's are a sound investment. Eflite servos are pure junk. Good value, but break at a glance. Sooner you invest the sooner you get the payback. I've lost track of my crashes and never had a problem with these servos (HG or mg).

So I got the servos in, programmed, and felt an immediate improvement!!

I programmed the dead band down to 1, reversed them each and, set end points, and center, all on the programmer. The heli is way more precise feeling.

The output shaft is twice the size and metal.

If you have the money Hitec's are worth every dime!
