Yea... 9-1/2 years to go... I was screwed out of 7 years. The company closed and moved the department I was in. It took 7 years to get called back, even though I remained as a contractor with the company...the contracting time doesn't count towards retirement. Otherwise I would be retiring in 3 years...

Nah, more like 6. It was a Saturday so we had people coming over and we started with Drinks on the deck around 4.

It was a beautiful day and I was meeting Mark (who likes mornings) so I went in the morning to make the most of it. If I have the entire day and don't head out before lunch, then either the wife or the kids are going to start bugging me to do something else.

No point in sitting around home all day wasting valuable daylight when Ive been up since 6am.

I'd rather start enjoying my life while I'm still young and working. Raising kids is expensive, it takes decades of working and saving unless you get lucky and hit a 7 figure startup payout (i did not). We do the best we can.

It was nice and cool this morning. Temps in low to high 70 s. Stayed at the field for about couple of hours and put 5 flights on my mongoose before I ran out of gas. I like slow lazy flying with this heli. This one is pretty quiet compared to my other helis. Could be the belt drive and 850 mm size blades on low rpms.

Default Outing today in Medfield

Got there a little earlier as it was overcast with a low ceiling (yes, I was able to punch through that with my gasser...!) and not a whole lot of wind through not calm either. I had Ian's drone with me to test out for him and make sure all is OK as well as my 1005 and Whiplash.

Started out with the drone and did a couple of test/tuning flights. Then I put the batteries on charge and took off with the 1005. Two flights with the 1005 I need to do some checking on the head I redid the head for the Spectra last time out and its much better feeling, this looks like it could use some maintenance also. Will work on that shortly.

Another couple of flights with the drone and some chat with Paul on the phone turbine engines going out in the next couple of days It started to rain so I decided to pack it up and not fly the Whiplash today.

Almost forgot when I got to the field I disturbed some mosquitoes and there was a bunch all around me. I decided to "clean up" first before flying and I spent about 10 minutes zapping like 8 of them. Then throughout the flying I managed to get 4 more. Today was a winner, Raja 12 Mosquitoes 0!

Default Another day, another outing

This was kind of the same day, more calm, quite calm actually, with the same ceiling as yesterday was able to punch through it on the first auto again. Ooops, disappearing into the clouds time to throttle hold before its totally gone!

The mosquitoes were worse today, the bug zapper got wet from the 100% humidity and stopped working, had to refrain to manual killing. It was too much I ended up spraying myself with crap, and while that did protect me for a little while I made a mistake to take a walk to the house and back and many came out of the grass and followed me back to the truck was not a good time trying to fly and fend them off.

I managed 4 flights with the 1005, didn't take out the whiplash today as the grass was wet and clippings all over the heli skids and such, I didn't want to dirty up the Whiplash. 1005 flew good from 1600 head speed all the way to 2000 its smooth and good now after the new thrust bearings in the head.

Default Late for updates

Sunday a customer came over with his scale heli with the H1 autopilot. He just finished putting it in the fuse and wanted me to go over everything with him and make sure it looks good to fly. We sat outside in the back yard with his laptop and tools and went through the software etc to check the configs. After everything was good I put it up for him in the back yard and spent some time making some adjustments. All in all it went OK he's got some homework to fix you can't get to the mechanics well with the fuselage on but he was happy with the visit.

Default Its turbine time again!

Allright, so my engine came back yesterday from service had an oil leak when I got it and needed a bearing seal/spring to be replaced. I spent some time last night putting it back in the model and more time this morning putting a short tail on it as I'm waiting on long tail parts and longer blades for it.

Went to the field and flew it around, slowly at first several flights today making some adjustments after each flight. By 6pm I was more comfortable and confident things were in good shape and I put on the canopy and flew it one more flight doing some of my usual aerobatics. It flew nice and sounded good and best of all after all the flights today no oil leaks anywhere

This heli is flying with a 1350mah RX Lipo pack and a 2550 turbine Lipo pack powered by a Jewel generator system to support all the on-board power. Once the turbine is idling even if you power off the RX and turbine switches (disconnect batteries) the machine will continue to run on generator power only. See below all the time I put on it today about 12 minutes per tank (has double tank upgrade) for 5 flights, the ECU was zero when I started. Also of note the turbine battery is right at 8v even after all this flight time, the system is working perfectly -- LOVE IT!

Default Day 2 of turbine mania

Some sprinkles today preventing me from working on the driveway, I started thinking I need to go fly this turbine again and started itching for it. I topped off the 2 1/4 kero tank to full and grabbed the Whiplash gasser and turbine and was quickly on my way to the field. I passed some drizzle on the way there but when I arrived it seemed to be dry so I pulled it out quickly and proceeded to refuel the tanks.

I have a hand crank pump and this thing takes like 1/2 gallon to fill up so it takes a while to get it loaded up and ready to go. Once ready you don't need to do anything but put it down where you want to "burn" the grass and go sit back, relax on the tailgate of the truck, and flip a switch and throttle up and back down, and the start sequence is on its way. It never seizes to amaze me, I love the sound of the turbine, and after about 30 seconds I see the red tail-light come on from the generator power telling me the start shaft is now turning and we're charging. That is just so awesome to see for me, best thing I ever did

At this point throttle hold was already off for engine starting so I just push the throttle stick up and the rotors start to turn as I take the turbine from 55,000 up towards 165,000 for liftoff. She is so smooth its practically like an electric and you lift off rock solid without a twitch anywhere. I now have the governor set for any rpm from 1600 through 2000 between 3 flight modes and a fine tuning slider of 50 rpms up and down. I've flown this thing at 50 rpm increments from 1600 all the way to 2000. Low and slow over the field I'm at 1650 to 1700, for cruising around I've done 1800-1850, and for 3D stuff and tick tocks I've done 1900, 1950, and 2000.

With a half gallon on board I have been able to run the engine close to 15 minutes, about 2 minutes of that is cooldown time, then there is some startup time, plus some autos here and there with idle time. Total in the air is about 12 minutes per fuel load, there are 3 tanks, two main and one header or bubble diffuser is a better term for it. Once you get into this tank you need to land asap as it doesn't last very long though for me its a non issue if it quits I do what I do best and just auto it down calmly no worries.

Since the startup routine and cooldown routine takes a little time, I spent the rest of the time in between flying the whole tanks and only making adjustments after landing and shutdown to adjust governor tuning as I need to cycle power to go into the hidden menus to make changes. The whole kero can lasted 5 flights with a total of 78 minutes added to yesterday's total run time of the ECU.

I have to say I enjoyed it to the max and for two days now my Whiplash gasser has made the trip to the field only to sit in the bed of the truck and go home at the end of the day without a drop of fuel going through it...I'm sure she's not happy with me...!

Attached is a picture of her on the bench for your viewing pleasure plus the ECU lifetime count and last flight run time. Turbine battery still checks in at 8v even with all the starting and cooling down, etc. I'm very pleased with that! You can also see how I moved the voltmagics tonight so they are parallel, I think it looks better this way.

WoW Raja! That's 5.33 ounces of fuel per minute of flight time...

And what does it cost per gallon?

Default Fuel cost

Its $3.69 a gallon last two times I filled up and the oil was $90 for two gallons so it works out to $2.25 per gallon so $5.89 per gallon of fuel/oil mix.

So now we're talking about 24 minutes for $5.89 or about 25 cents a minute to fly.

The gasser, as always, has been the cheapest thing to fly

It wasn't hot today but grey skies due to fire and smoke here in central valley. Bad air quality. Put four quick flights on the mongoose and called it a day. Also, put four flights on whiplash V1 on Monday which I got to add to the total count. Getting pretty close to the 100 flight count on my mongoose this year.

Default Quick?

Nothing is usually quick for me with the gassers, when you say:

"Put four quick flights"

Does that mean shorter flights and/or how many minutes? A flight for me is a full tank so if I fly and land short, then I fly the rest of the tank before I count it as one. Otherwise the flight count is not accurate for me at least.

Same goes if I am tuning I could make 10 flights but total air time is only 63 minutes for example so I call it 4 flights.

Default Flights

15 minutes flights but very short breaks between the flights. Sometimes it takes me four hours to complete four 15 minutes flights because I am busy yapping with club members. Some days I canít stay for too long so crank out one after another.

Default I'm sick of mosquitoes, really am

I sprayed myself today and they are still coming and finding any hole or biting through the socks or shirt, etc. Can't wait until the cold weather comes, they plain suck!

I took the turbine today and did some more governor tuning. Due to the mosquito interruptions, I was confused about the ECU showing 157 seconds run time on one of the flights. 157 seconds, not possible! Until I realized it rolled over 999 and it meant 1157 seconds which is over 19 minutes. Did is due to the 10 autorotations that I had to shoot to land and kill some more mosquitoes that were chewing me up!

I figure out the LMHV parameter for the turbine now, I know where it needs to be. The other one I think is close but I'll work on tuning that a little next outing, though I may take a break and bike ride instead as the mosquitoes can't get you on the bike, too much wind thankfully!

I'm just about running out of turbine fuel. Whatever is left in the 5 gallon jug can fit in the 2 1/4 gallon container now. I need to make another run to get some more. This time around I may fill up 10 gallons instead of just 5 per trip there.

Default Today in Fresno

Today was the Pylon racing day for the club members. There were couple of spectacular midair crashes. I know it sucks for the pilots who crashed the planks but the rest of the members had a good laugh. They collected all the pieces they could find and took few pics along with the pilots. I was able to burn about three tanks to get " two 15 minute flights" on my whiplash V2. Normally it takes me five tanks to get four flights on all my helis.
