Default Solid 2mm CF into stock main frame. What adhesive?

Hey Everyone,

Had a bad crash yesterday and snapped my sold 2mm CF tail boom off. Unfortunately, I could not get the piece out of the stock main frame. I had CA'd it with thin CA and it created a bond I could not break. I ended up breaking the main frame trying to get it out!

What do you guys use to bond your tail booms to the frame?

Thanks,
Pete

I did the same thing, but mine hasn't broken yet.. I used a kid friendly superglue with the hopes that it isn't as strong and I will be able to pull the CF rod out.. I actually have the CF rod into the MH aluminum boom.. Instead of screws, i juse used a longer piece.. less chance to break if u dont drill 2 holes into the CF.

If you need it to fit a bit tighter, coat the end of the boom with thin CA, wipe it off and let it cure BEFORE inserting it into the frame. The slight added thickness will make for a more snug fit. If it ends up too tight, just sand some off gently.

My solid booms are a snug fit in the frame. I use an Asteroid design tail mount. Acetone will release CA almost immediately and it will not damage plastic, do not use on foam.

tjhelipilot is referring to the properties of acetone

specifically...

I'll never forget the time I learned that important lession. Chem lab in college, I went to use a bottle of squirt alcohol to clean my plastic protective lab glasses. Only the bottle was not alcohol. Guess I should have read the label better.

No just a little dab will not damage plastic it wil release CA rapidly. DO NOT SOAK IN A POT OF THE PRODUCT. IF YOU HAVE EVER USED CA RELEASE THEN YOU KNOW WHAT THAT IS. JUST A THOUGHT. I work in the coatings industry the evaporation rate is so high that any problems are minimal. In fact I released a tail boom from a frame that I used CA on the frame and boom were fine. I used a tip of paper towel and and a dip in acetone. Sometimes thinking to much will get you in trouble.

I've used CA debonder......it's mostly nitromethane.....not acetone....at least with the debonder that I've used.

I dare you to try this:

1) Get a Q-tip and dip it in acetone.

2) Swab the Q-tip on your servo arm and its housing. Any servo will do.

3) Let it evaporate.

Note that the servo has been melted where the acetone was applied.

Thanks for all of the insightful posts! . Got my new frame setup, just need to cut a new tail boom for it.

Friction fit sounds good this time!

I had used thin CA when I setup the last one...problem is that stuff comes out quickly and seeps everywhere. That is how I CA'd the servo gears on my elevator servo! I tried acetone dipped q-tips to no avail, though it shredded what was left of the solid 2mm rod. I then used a drill bit but that didn't work either. Fortunately the tail box came off easily. I am going to be careful with putting just enough CA on the tail box only...

It's strange isn't it? some people have to shave the 2mm CF rod to get it in and for some (like me) the CF rod had to be glued in...
