tail motor issues
Not sure what is going on with my tail motor. I had a bad crash and the tail motor came apart. Replaced it with a new one and only got 8 flights with no crashes on it when it suddenly stopped working. Bought and installed a new one and it barely works and is very warm after 30 seconds of spin up. Do I have a bad ESC?

Might be a bad ESC but let's check all wiring before you replace it.
You will need to pull the boom and wiring to make sure it does not have any cuts that might be causing a direct short. A place that may receive un-noticed damage is where the boom enters the frame on the main gear side. The boom can slide forward on impact and cut the wiring. Do a good over-look and see if it might be as stated above. Also, look at the windings on the new motor. If the ESC is bad, it can cause the motor to burn and visa-versa. Winding should be bright copper color not blue or black. Also, make sure the tail motor does not bind on the motor mount housing. Should be turning counter clockwise under power. (I bet you knew that) Lastly, make sure the tail rotor is on correctly with the shiny side out. |

I thought it was a winding issue but 2 motors almost back to back makes me think it's something else. The wires on the motor I just replaced look fine. No cuts or abrasions. The newest motor is barely spinning and warm to the touch after 20-30 seconds. The heli basically has no tail rotor control to counter the main rotor torque and spins around.

While it's unlikely, it is certainly possible that the new replacement motor could be defective. That said, I believe it might be the ESC.
Tough to diagnose this issue as it can be one or the other and each can cause the failure of one or the other. ESC can be less expensive on eBay if you need to pick one up. Only reason I shy away from the ESC is that I've had no problems on the ESC and I have 4 230S helis all getting a lot of flight time. Unlike the 200srx ESC, this one seems to be quite durable! My luck on durability may be to not crashing but that info doesn't help you solve the problem. |

have you checked to be sure tale prop is on correctly by any chance? Shiny side out ? I totally missed that on my 230 and it drove me nuts...

Would definitely check the wires/connections from the tail motor to esc like Bill mentioned. Good chance they were damaged in the crash and have issues without crashing sometimes. Quite a few have had them come unsoldered from the esc. +1 on the tail prop as well, always check the easiest things first
Would recommend giving HH tech support a call as well. They'll give you some ideas to try out and if it is the tail motor or esc hopefully they'll send you new ones for free. That sucks brother. Anytime you kill the tail motor and/or the esc in a crash, the claims of DD helis being cheaper to crash goes right out the window.

I did. I even looked at close-up pictures of the 250cfx on the blade website to make sure it was on the correct way. I believe the tail prop is opposite on the 230s. It's been a minute though since I've installed one on my 230s.

+1 on Tande's post.
With the tail rotor mounted incorrectly, the motor can heat up pretty quickly. That explains some of the heat but does not explain the slow rotation/lack of response. This makes me think more along the ESC. A friendly reminder..... more heat can be directly related to drawing more (too much) current/amperage which is controlled by the ESC. If the ESC is bad, it can draw more amperage and respond like you describe. |

Guessing you took things apart when you inspected the wires and checked the usual areas that get damaged?
Where they enter the tail boom and any other areas they can get cut, pinched or rubbed. Sure sounds like a short somewhere. Make double sure there's no damaged insulation ect before replacing the esc and/or tail motor. If it's a short somewhere that cooked them then the same short will kill the new ones too. Good luck, hope you get airborne again soon
