Default Not for the faint hearted:-)

Ok this was a BIGGY, hit hard and fast. The 6hv is SOOOO fast that you know any crash is going to be a whopper when you are starting to push the envelope. I have been stuck in a bit of a rut trying to move my skills further, but just over the last few weeks things have started to come together- backwards flight in all orientations, hurricane, pie dish (messy at this stage) and working on transitions between tricks. So I guess I will be going through a bit of a crash stage while I am pushed in real (not sim) practise.

WOW, that was a bad one. So sorry and good luck with the rebuild.

Just crashed. CRAP! I was doing some inverted practice then went to auto's near the end of the pack. I was trying left to right auto's. I usually do auto's right to left. Well, firse one was OK. Second one wasn't. Not sure what happened. I think I was correcting my flight path and lost headspeed. Not enought left, packed it in pretty good. Fortunately the struts took most of it. They are toast. Also broke a flybar link and bent main shaft. Just placed my order to Nankin. $20. I certainly can't complain about that. Gotta love Compass heli's and Nankin hobby !!!

I had my RX pack take a dive on me with the 6HV at the FF two weeks ago. Main shaft, struts, and main blades. That was it! It munched into pure pavement and mostly just had scratches on it, so I am quite happy with how durable she is so far (As if I had any doubts anyways).

The "Maiden" Crash ... aka "Breaking-In the Atom 500"

I didn't tidy up the front cyclic wires yet as I wanted to make sure everything was running nice before the final touches.

I got lucky in a sense, but this is a direct result of being over eager on a build.

Oh no! What happened man? That kills me to see that happen to you so soon. It took me almost 2 years of owning my Atom before I planted it (just the other day actually) so I feel your pain. Hopefully you can get her back up and running soon!

*I* happened to it. :o

I'm embarrased to say that I was over-eager in getting it into the air and overlooked a few crucial things:

1. I forgot to set the SK360 orientation in the software and didn't check proper operation of the stabilization.
2. Seized auto-rotation/one-way bearing from the factory.
3. No training gear. Should have used them until I knew it was ready.
4. No expo. I probably should have dialed some in until I had it stable in the air and everything tweaked.

I knew better ... I was all worked up about it yesterday, but I'm over it now and ready to accept my lumps. Just need to get auto-rotation sleeve and bearings replaced by Compass or A Main. The rest of the parts are on order.

Sorry for your loss Crazy_Canuck, but a question here. I see you use the outer hole on the servo horns in the FBL set-up of your atom. Is the geometry ok this way, because i know Compass advises to use the second hole on the servo horns for FBL set-up.

Grtz,
Dirk

Tx, Dirk!

The main manual said to use the outer holes for 3D. I initially was going to use the inner hole, but the geometry was off a bit when I mocked up the push rods to see which would work best.

My FBL head didn't come with a manual. Just two sheets of paper, one with an exploded parts view, and the other with replacement part numbers.

The geometry was actually better this way as well due to the placement of the 3517 servo output shaft. The push rods are perfectly 90 degrees at mid-stick in the outer hole. I'll take photos once I get the heli back together (if I remember ... lol).

Hi Guy’s, I feel all you pains, I don’t own any compass heli’s yet but I’m going to get an Atom 500 after I had enough of my Trex 500. They look like they fly some much better and a little faster. I have over 50\60 totals out of 200 or more flights. My new saying is Fly high and keep it in the sky!

Wait, you mean the shorter or closer in hole right? The furthest hole is meant for sport flying. I do admit, my 3650's have not a single problem hefting the Atom around on the outermost position and it does line up better, the closer you have them in the more resolution you will get and the more the torque can be taken advantage of. I made th emistake of setting mine up incorrectly this time, but I'm simply too lazy to go back and set it all up again at this point!

Does this get me in?

I took the Atom 500 with me on holiday for the long weekend and was practicing some auto's on the beach.
Needless to say I had a tip over, popped a link and stripped a gear set. When it tipped over I head a whirring sound and wasn't sure what would make a sound like that... Now I know.
Had to clean it up to bring home in the car so sorry for the lack of original background scenery.

Man these things are built tough!!!

No. The hole furthest from the output shaft is for 3D according to the manual....

I've taken a photo of the manual.

Not much of a crash but as it is my Atom 500's maiden *ding* since I bought the thing a year ago I thought I'd share.

Yeah but this is meant with flybarred heli's, when you go FBL you must surely take the innerhole of the servohorn to get correct geometry for your FBL system !

Dirk

Compass really needs better instructions for their FBL system then, because there's nothing otherwise to tell a person which holes to use on the servo horns in the kit I received.

All that I got was 2 bits of paper, one with an exploded view and the other with the list of parts. No other instructions supplied.

I'm not sure what geometry you are are referring to, because when I installed the servos, if I used the inner holes (closest to the output shaft) ... the servo rods are not 90 degrees at mid-stick.

I know what you mean Crazy_Canuck,

There was a promise that there would be a manual for the FBL kits after IRCHA, but it seems nothing is happening .... Well hopefully they will rectify this once the long promised new website will be online. I know customers deserve better but it is what is ....

Grtz,
Dirk

This is under the swash, so it is the same geometry right? But yes inner hole = more torque and resolution.

Well I'll be damned! They're completely different! I have one of the original, original manuals (pre-production I'm guessing?), but they are totally opposite. That seems pretty odd, but it's in black and white, so who knows?!?!?!?

Here's Canuck's:

Here's mine (Skunkworx's):
