I was kinda thinking the resistor might be attached to the led and therefore aid in getting the polarity right.

In case you're not pulling my antenna, here's a link re current flow. It goes beyond the usual "but the electrons flow in the other direction" position. Current flow is impacted by all resistance in the path, before and after.
