Default What is the stupidest top 3 things that you did learning about the world of RC helis?

I hope this will be a FUNNY and EDUCATIONAL tool/thread for all who follow in our footsteps!

But..I must disqualify the most dangerous mistake so don't post this one.

Turn on TX, then RX, then main battery when ready to fly, shut down is done in reverse order.

Mine, as I must go first is....drum roll please....

1) Make sure that your flybar paddles are facing in the right direction.
2) Make sure that when programming your ESC that you are in programming mode and not in initialization mode and your motor is disarmed without main blades attached!
3) Make sure that your gyro is not in a reverse situation and the heli spins in total chaos upon spool-up.

Always unplug your motor before using the sticks to program a CC ESC.

I put my first heli ( T-rex 450 v2 ) into the ceiling many years ago because of that little error .

Default Model Changes

Never, Ever, EVER!!!! change models while the nitro .90 Heli is running and you have made a mistake. I very stupidly changed the model programming from one model to another with it running in idle. I had accidentally selected the wrong model during run up however I didn't realize it till I tried to hover, then with it at Idle I didn't shut it off and just switched models, I was very lucky and didn't hurt myself or anyone else, however it cost me a perfect set of blades both tail and main and clutch....... don't do that one again.

Back when I first got a Blade CP in 2006, I went brought it too the hobby shop to get them to look it over because it wasn't flying right. Well as it turns out I had both paddles nearly vertical as I thought it would give more lift.

1) Bought a blade cp pro
2) Forgot to turn it off while programming a radio and chicken danced it in my kitchen.
3) After swapping Receivers on my 600, didn't make sure the swash was moving in the the proper direction prior to spooling up. Right was left, left was right...and damages ensued.

I'm a newbie, so I haven't had time to make many major mistakes yet... but one I did make is not getingt into this great hobby sooner... I am 43 and am having a blast... I only wish I discovered this great hobby sooner!

Wow! Flybar paddles near vertical? I don't feel so bad anymore. Just goes to show everyone here that a good pilot will usually have a humble start!

Yeah, you should always turn off your TX to make a model change final whether accidental or on purpose. Really good advice!

I take it he knows that now....
I was setting up my Falcon several months ago after I changed it over to 2.4g and in the setup I reversed
the throddle channel and that thing took off wide open skyward.. and climbed to DOT city I changed the
setting back and it came down just as fast as it went up....hahahaha

Off the top of my head....

1.) Bought a BCPP

2.) Installed a set of blades backwards. In my defense, they looked similar top and bottom. I then continued to try and track them like that.

3.) Flew untill my Tx batt was dead --------->CRASH

Default That's easy!

1) Not learning all orientations in the very beginning.

2) Not learning all orientations in the very beginning.

3) Not learning all orientations in the very beginning.

Believe me, there could be no bigger mistake for me because it is very, very difficult to figure out nose in on a real model heli after two years of tail in returns and landings. It's fairly easy on the sim, just frightening in the wild blue yonder!
Respectfully,
Ed
