I remember doing some side frames for a picolo micro years ago and there was a company in the UK where you sent them the out line drawing in auto cadd and they'd tell you what it cost to CNC in CF. The limiting factor was the materail sheet size , as in, how many frames they could get from one sheet and of course once set up the cost of doing 2 or more sheets was relatively small.
You may also want to consider the finishing aspect as this is time consuming ( read expensive). If you are willing to accept the frames raw and do the de-buring / edge smotthing yourself theres a significant cost saving right there.

While doing some research for a completely different project i visited these guys here in Singapore . http://www.dama.com.sg/

According to them poly carbonate is nearly bullet proof so i would imagine is most suited for heli frames
One thing you may want to consider is the thermal properties of the material you decide upon . Not sure about your heli but even my trex has some "hot spots" after 10 or so mins of lfying

Following with interest ...keep up the good work

Cheers

Phil
+1 on the polycarbonate. I am pretty sure you could order it in lots of different clear fourescent colors and if we could save some $ by doing our own deburring, great!

Check the area between the canopy stand off post and the rear screw on the top main bearing block. Seems as though adding a bit more surface area to the top of the frame would buy some strength.

Looks great! Can't wait to see production!

The direct-link servo mount is super. A bigger OWB is smarrrrrt!

Thanks! Can't wait to see production!

Well the latest revision (6.5 i think)

Has been fully assembled in Acrylic and test flown!!

Seems to be super smooth and quite with the new gear adjustment system.

She is flying so much better than it did with the plastic frame and pushpull servo linkages.

This version highlighted a few more smaller problems so i think one more Acrylic version before i commit to the small amount of carbon i have available.

I have found a good source of carbon Fibre so if people are still interestedin buying a set of frames then please let me know.
I would like to produce them in batches of Six if possible.

Cheers guys

Ben

Does it use all the same drive gears and bearings? or do we need to change those out?

I would certainly be interested....depending on cost.

Ben, maybe we should meet up at Likas on Monday or Tuesday, get some shots, or do you wanna show those pics of it we took last Saturday? If you haven't dismantled it-maybe one in flight?

I believe there are grub screws probably inside the fan housing....I never really looked.

I wonder if my squeal is from the motor, but both bearings feel very smooth....and I don't even have 100 flights on that motor yet.

I'm just going to fly the crap out of it until it become very obvious which bearing is bad....or soemthing else shows up....

I also like you "Key and slot" idea for possible bearing removal....I may have to ry it if I ever get really serious about replacing the bearings.....

Default Head Hunter

Marco you are F**king nuts!!!!!

So for all those impatient people. here are some pics.

Oh and by the way the heli can be built using completely stock bearings, bearing blocks and motor mount or you can use my new center bearing mount with main shaft size bearings on OWB shaft plus a new lower OWB shaft bearing block also to take a main shaft size bearing. All the bearings are stock Hurricane bearings all i have done is to allow two main shaft bearings for the OWB shaft.
You can use the new motor mount on existing carbon OR plastic framed hurricanes.
The only things you Must have to use the frame are the new 120dgree servo mounts the landing gear mounts and the battery mount aluminum brackets.

I am thinking of calling it the Head Hunter. what do you guys think?
I my set up a small company called Head Hunter Heli's to manufacture them if there is enough interest.

I dont know why the pics are black and white the originals are colour

Will try and get some more pics for you guys soon.

Let me know what you guys think

Cheers all

Ben

That looks very, very impressive Ben - well done. One quick question - is it the same height as a standard 550 as it looks taller, it looks as if there is more height between the lower OWB mount and the skids.

Nice one

Mike.

Hey Mike

The height of the frame is the same as standard.

In the photos shown there is no spacer between the landing gear and the frames so it sits perfectly level.
I was thinking of adding the spacers into the frame design and giving it a 5mm rake from front to back. This will raise the tail up a bit.

thanks for the kind words

Ben

Ben.....Nice work.....so....we loose the side frames and the heli just uses two main frames?

Is the acrylic as strong as CF?...is it brittle?...obvioulsy we are all hoping we won't crash but have you figured out a rough possible cost yet?

Looks really nice though....and hopefully with the larger OWB you'll solve a lot of problems......

keep us in the loop.....

Great work....wish I had a milling machine....

damn looking good ben (and jb... for emotional support/cracking the whip)
i was also wondering about possible crash cost, because of the gaps between the supporting pieces could crack and separated in a wreck (yeah i just ruined a heli 2 days ago so you can tell what's on my mind). however, even so, having the bigger bearing option well compensates. damn i gotta wipe the drool off my pants before i go to work.

"that's what she said!" eyoooooo! damn im funny
