Bob has some 450XL SE videos too that should be really close to the 450XL.

Gary,

Glad you found archeli. Yup, Bob's videos are a marvelous resource that have helped me (and hundreds of other folk) a lot.

Be sure to watch the full set, even for the heli's that you don't own, since you will pick up all kinds of useful hints and develop a greater understanding of the differences and similarities between helis.

If yours is a 450XL(CDE) then watch Bob's SE build videos from here:
https://www.helifreak.com//viewtopic.php?t=12455

Beware, you're gonna get hooked

Kenneth, I think I'm already starting to get hooked and I'm still only putting it together Thanks for the link - I'd already downloaded a couple of those but it's good to know that I should probably take a look at all of them.

Thanks guys

Hi there all.

I currently have a Walkera #36 and am hoping to get my 450XL CDE in the next few weeks. This will be my first heli build, so you guys can expect many questions from me.

Before asking my questions, I big shout out to Bob for his time and effort with helping on this forum.
Bob, you are an inspiration to the rest of us.

In Bob's videos, he refers to something called "Plumber's/Shoe Goop".
Can someone explain to me what this is? I have spoken to people here in South Africa, and can't seem to get any information. Am I correct in saying that it is a type of silicon?
If I am not able to find the exact brand that Bob uses, I want to try and find something equivalent.

What is the best lubricant to use on metal to metal components? Is it white lithium grease (I have heard Bob mention it in his videos)?

Is it advisable to lubricate the tail belt? If so, what is the best lubricant to use and what would be the best way to do it?

Just a note to add to one of Bob's replies regarding tools. He mentioned the Align hex screwdrivers. I have just bought myslef a set and must agree with him. The tools are of a very good quality and are not expensive at all. I don't know how I did without them before.

TIA

If this helps, thisa is a picture of the "shoe goop".
It's a rubber type cement. Picture attached

For every flight type of lube (Swash, washout hub, tail slider, etc) Use Tri-flow teflon based oil or a light machine oil like what RC car people use.

Shanea1,

The only place in Australia I found to get genuine USA brand "ShoeGoo" is Just Hockey ( http://justhockey.com.au/ ) . Luckily they have a store here in Melbourne:

Just Hockey Melbourne
279 Burke Rd
Glen Iris, Vic 3146
Ph: (03) 9885 7050

I imagine there are a number of locally available glues from Selleys and the like that would be the same, but it's hard to know without buying and trying them. The Shoe Goo is a sticky clear gel type adhesive that quickly skins and forms a flexible joint. It can be easily cleaned off smooth surfaces simply by peeling and rubbing.

Is the Futaba S-3110 servo enough for this heli? speed .10 torque 22oz. What about the size? 21.8mm long 11mm thick and I think 19mm tall. Will it fit? My LHS just got 3 SA kits in stock and these are the servos I have available, and a GY190 gyro.

The spare gyro I have now is a Futaba GY-190. I would like to use it untill I get a GY-611 for my glow heli. At that point I'll take my GY-401 off of the glow heli, put it on the Rex, and buy a S9650 for the tail of the Rex.

But I'm more concerned about the servos being good enough untill I can get some HS-65MG servos in it.

Eric.

Hello. was building head on my first TREX 450XL HDE following the video. (wonderful resource....thank you)

Anyway, I stripped the threads in the plastic arms of the flybar cage tightening the grub screws. So I ordered the Align brand metal cage. The video shows pinching the cage against the seesaw bearings while tightening grub screws. With the metal cage, there is no give and this is not possible, so there is a bit of slop.

Should I add shim washers or do I also need to run a metal seesaw, to make the tolerences work?

Thanks again to Finless.

Lubrication question: I don't see any use of lubrication during assembly. From my background assembly is the best time to apply some basic lubrication to ensure operation. On Trex 450 should we use lubrication? what kind? should we be using light lubrication during assembly?

just asking..I'm new to Helis.

Silicone spray (not petroleum based) on belt is really all you need.
Triflow-dry perhaps on tail shaft where the pitch slider slides, triflow-dry on your balls if you like the idea of it.

Don't use light oil anywhere as it will attract/hold dust and dirt which will abrade surfaces plus it will get into bearings and wash out the grease.

Check Bob's field maintenance 101 video for other suggestions.
