Way to think outside the box! How did you fasten the front side of the servo?
I couldn't tell from the pic.

Double sided tape. Not the best way but between that and the rear mount I think its acceptable.
A simple mount could be made to go off one of the tail gear block screws.

Nice setup but, that servo is way to big for that heli ,way to big ,to bad there's not another way to go,I really think that Align drop the ball on this 250 tail,This heli should not have been released with all these tail issues, you buy this heli new and have to spend more money to get it some what rite ,as for me this is just to much already, any body want to buy a trex 250.

Its no big deal. With bigger packs it would be just fine.
The only reason I'm using a 9257 is because I had a spare.

To have and fly a 250 I spent $180.
Tail problems or not I think that says a lot.

+1

Ok the 9257 might be a little big, but it does the job very well indeed. I run a bigger servo, BLS251, on my 500 and it does the job very well too.

There was really only one major issue with the tail when it came out and that has been resolved and I'm sure the majority of people got the new hub FOC like I did. The DS420 wasn't upto the job so I belive they now issue the new kits with a DS520? (Which is the same size as the 9257)

do you have any issues with the 401 mounted on the side.

Also how did you mount it. I can see the zip tie but did you use double sticky tape on the back to?

The gyro is not mounted on its side. I separated the gyro into 2 parts and mounted the face plate on the side of the heli and the gyro part at its normal location.

Mini GY401 thread.

This tail issuse has not been resolved, with the new hub you still need a much bigger servo to do the job and all that dose is mask the realy problem, this heli was not ready for release to me that was a big mistake by align, and if you picked a trex 250 up for 180.00 thats great ,but I know I paid way more then that for( try like 600 with batterys) mine, and now I need to buy a bigger servo, smaller tail blades, new hub,cf push rod for the tail,I have a buddy that did all of the upgreads does it fly better yes but it still wags from time to time and dose not hold like it should, lets not fool ourselfs guy this thing is real close to being a flop,I owen 3 others helis from align they all work great rite out of the boxes ,what happen to the 250 that is my question!!!

I used a Robbed FS61BB prior to the S9257 and it worked well, it was locked in and didn't wag or step out. I put the 9257 on there to give it the extra locked in feel that I've been so used to with a Spartan DS760.

I did make a custom CF push rod but I do this on all my helis, and prior to that it was fine.

Personally I'm not 'masking' any problems. Give me another servo and I'm pretty confident it will work well.

If you think it is a flop - sell it! If you can't get it setup yourself you need to learn how to!

My 500 had issues out of the box - I had a static hit that grounded it!

My 250 with the logitec gyro/servo combo flies great!

I think everyone in this hobby knows that to get a heli flying good takes some tinkering.

After looking at the weight difference (.25oz vs .92oz) and needing a 9257 for another heli I picked up a JR DS290G for the tail.

I'd like to pick up a Spartan but I'll keep the modded 401 for now.

EDIT: I guess I should have gone with the 3100G? hmm.

Many people are having great success with the 290G. Give it a try and report back what you think

Thanks. I almost swapped servos on my order but decided to go with the 290G.

I just assembled a new kit and it came with a ds420. It works great for me. I think the 9650 is waaaaaay too big for the 250. Such overkill.

I just flew 4 batts this afternoon. Awesome heli!

Did you new kit have a sticker on the front of it mentioning about not to use the ESC above 5.5v with the DS420s ?

No stciker was on it... if it was I didn't see and it was thrown in the trash with the plastic wrap. I bought the super combo kit with the new plastic-injection-molded insert to hold everything in place. Quite a nice and impressive way to package my $429+ expenditure!

Ah ok maybe I have been mistaken with the DS520 being issued... Did yours have metal tail pulley and tail shaft?
