Default HBFP V1 upgraded skids compared

King Battery Hanger & Skids vs SuperSkids

A lot of people have been asking about upgraded skids, therefor I decided to post a tutorial

Stock skids are light and great if your an accomplished flyer. Light weight means longer flight time and a quicker, more agile bird. However when first learning to hover or to fly outdoors in a light breeze some "low" weight is preferred for stability. The strength of upgraded skids is also welcome to the new pilot as stock skids break often from hard landings or a crash. This brings us to the two most popular landing skid modifications, the King Battery Hanger & Skids and SuperSkids.

Stock skids: Personally I like the look more then the big bulky SuperSkids but without a full frame the stock skids make the heli look cheap and spindly.

SuperSkids weight in at 32 grams

KBHS weigh in at 29grams. Surprisingly only 3 grams lighter as they appear to bee much lighter then SuperSkids

SuperSkids IMO are way too large and bulky. They are almost the same size as on my Trex 450! They offer little frame support and no structure for mounting electronics.

KBHS IMO look great! They are slightly lighter (3gr) which helps as weight quickly becomes an issue with more mods after upgrading the skids.

The KBH&S provides strength to the entire frame, offer structure for adding electronics (LBA, external ESC, external gyro, ect) and the full framed battery hanger make the heli look more like a professional CP helicopter.

Another nice touch is the skids and skid grips are pre drilled and screws (provided) lock into each skid so they dont twist.

Only modification needed to fit the battery hanger is to dremel or cut out a small notch to clear the main gear. (remember the battery hanger is built for the HoneyBee King)

My 1000 Turnigy and 1000 Zippy lipos are a perfect snug fit inside the battery hanger. When placed on the SuperSkids forward mount the 1000 lipos were far too heavy and threw off the COG.

Plenty of room for components. My next project is installing the "King brushed ESC" since the Xtreme 380XC (Xtra Crappy) blew my 4in1’s ESC. With the King battery hanger I now have plenty of room to mount the ESC

Another excellent post VL. I agree with you 100% about your comparisons. The King combination is far superior in my opinion. And, with a little careful work you can shave off another couple of grams of weight too without compromising strength or rigidity.

Hi VL, what sort of flight times are you getting with your setup.

But....I just don't like the look of the King skids....especially in white.

Do they come in any other colour?

hey just a qick note, I had to move my 4n1 forward a little to clear the King battery hanger, about the same amount that you shave off the rear (Ive got the V1 with, lipo and 2.4ghz) just thought Id throw that out there. might of been just mine,

Nice VL!!

I notice you still have the pitch on your flybar paddles. Is this to help with flotation in the pool?

My 4in1 is tight against the frame and held with super duper double stick tape

Yes Dan, remember , a little pitch keeps you out of the ditch and a little yaw keeps you out of the spa

Your welcome SHWELL

Personally PIN I think the Xtreme skids are Xtremely ugly but thats just my opinion. Im sure they are strong and the forward 4in1/lipo mount looks great. If you like the look then go for it!
Let us know how the fit and quality is when you get them.

I don't have any plan yet to change my skid, not until I use 3S lipo. I don't want to add anymore weight on my bee.
I seen this skid at my LHS. What I don't like from it is that the pipe is not secure by a screw or something. So the pipe can move around.

Drill a tiny hole and use a screw to secure the pipe from spinning. Thats what I did on my 450s. Just one tiny screw in each skid is all you need. You could also use a drop of CA
Pull the skid pipe 1inch further out then you want it. Then place a small CA drop on the pipe directly in front of the pipe grip. Now when you twist the pipe back into place it forces the CA into the grip. No mess or CA snail tracks either.

The CA would be a better option.
I'm not sure what the pipe made of, I think it's a carbon rod. And the diameter is around 3-4 mm, so screwing the pipe / rod is no good.

O ok, I guessed it was plastic. I do love that forward battery hanger though. Very nice and required for perfect COG on a Bee V1

I have one of those battery hanger. For 800mAh, the CG is ok, but with 1000mAh, I have to put my battery between the front landing skid.
A few weeks ago I replace my boom, and make it 1 inch shorter. I wasn't realize on what I did. Since then my bee is nose heavy, especially with the LBA installed. I get used to it, and has no problem flying her.

You could always throw on a couple heat sinks. If your running a DD tail theres a really cool black heat sink (PM me if interested and ill look it up) that works great and adds plenty of weight. (too much for me to use it with my current setup) That HS may get you back to perfect COG with the added benefit of a longer lasting motor.

Thanks. I think I know which heatsink you meant. I have seen it somewhere too.
I have HBCP3 tail heatsink on the way
