Default Lipo battery fire turned into Garage Explosion

6s 5000mAH Zippy lipo being chared on an Astroflight 109 version 2 blinky balancer charging a 2 amps I had just charge 3 6s Thunder power 5000mah and the the Zippy was on the thrid and final cycle and was not puffed or damaged in any way. Went iside and started watching a movie about half way through the movie my dog starts acting like he wants me to let him out to go pee so I put him out hear what sounded like knocking coming from the Garage start to make my way down about 15 feet from it when all of the sudden BOOM door blast open and big orange ball of fire rush in I run out and is see several small fires burning though out the garage and the garage door blown off. I was able to get the fire out by hitting them with a pair of shorts from the laundry basket.receive a few small burns from some of the melting plastic hitting me. As you can see in the photos above there was a Spray paint can on the bench that exploded causing a flash fire to blow the doors open and off. Everyone is ok Home owner insure is investigating house is boarded up and awaiting cleaning of the smoke damage they told us not to stay there due to the strong and irratating plastic smell and soot on the walls is not good for kids so we are staying in a friends 5th wheel in front of the house. To all those want to bash on me and say this would never happen to them good for you. To all those claiming this is a fake post hopefully putting all the info and pics in the first post will clear it up for you.

Wow.
Sorry to see that.

I doubt it was spontaneous though.
Over charged maybe?

Details?

What type of lipo or lipos exploded?

Was the lipo or were the lipo's in a sealed container - is that what caused the explosion?

I cannot understand how this could have possibly happened, that much force from a lipo or lipo's catching fire. Was there also a gas leak or something?

Battey was a 6s 5000mAH Zippy from hobby king about year and a half old not puffed at all. Charger was a Astro flight 109 and a blinky balancer charging at 2 amps it was on the 3rd cycle and when I went inside battery was not hot to touch or puffed at all put on a movie and about halfway through the movie heard what sounded like someone knocking on the garage door and my dog start freaking out so I put him in the back yard and start making my way to the garage door and then BOOM door blast open and big orange fire ball rush in. After the blast I rush in and put out 5 spot fires with an pair of short from the laundry I was really surprise that i was able to get it put out with that didnt even think to grab my fire extinguisher it all happen so fast. I got a few small burns from melting plastic. But other then that everyone is ok. Just thought I would share.

You must have an airtight garage, If the blast from a Lipo was strong enough to blow the garage door off it's track and also blow the entry door open...how come nothing else in the garage is destroyed? Did something else get ignited from the Lipo?

A sealed container is always a bomb.
Lipos need no oxygen to burn so all they can do in a container is build pressure.

Not saying this is the case.
Only an educational statement for people who don't know that.

I still dont understand what caused the explosion, all evidence in the past show fires not explosions. Was there any explosive liquids in the garage like gasoline?

It's a garage, tons of stuff in there that could have flamable contaminents in the air. Once an ignition source burns (lipo)....booom!!

there was an exploded spray paint can I had on the work bench but fire cheif say no way it would of caused an explosion with that much force. I told him I have never heard or seen a lipo blow with such force its more like a flame thrower. I still think it was the spray can but I am no expert.

Sorry guys, I call BS! There are way too many inconsistencies with this scene. Look at the pictures again.

I also don't get what caused the explosion.

As far as I've experienced with self- induced failure lipos will release a small amount of pressure, some heat, some smoke and maybe some flame-age.

Must have been something else going on here if its true (combustible near by, contained pack during charging, etc)

Is this even legit?

Glad no ones hurt. But it's hard to believe that the lipo Alone caused that much of a "blast". I still see stuff on the counter top next to the fire site. Those items didn't even move.

I'm not agreeing with you - necessarily - but if a 6 cell 5000 mAh lipo is in an airtight container and spews, then, I could see how - possibly - this sort of blast could occur. That's as far as my mind can stretch though.

This is why I asked about a closed container or possible gas leak.

The soft plastic of the lipos wouldn't be able to contain the pressure needed for that kind of a blast. They aren't made of TNT.

I agree the spray can or some other source caused the boom.

Thanks for sharing.
I never leave a battery near any other fuel source for a fire.
