Default Batteries - need some advise

So, I need some battery advise on the O550. I think I want to run a 5000mah 6S pack, but I need to know what C rating you guys recommend. Also any advise on a good "budget battery" would be appreciated. I have used Turnigy before on my planks and like them for the money. Keep in mind I am new to heli's and my skill does not extend beyond Hovering and FF as of yet. I hope to get the heli set up today so i can at least stare at it and drool.

Big thanks to TNT for hooking up a noobie.

I've used a lot of packs (including Turnigy) on my Outrage 550.. but I've settled with these for the long haul. Theres a Gens Ace thread on the main heli chat forum and you will see how many people love these.

US hobby store so free (and fast) shipping.

I have been using the Turnigy 30C and 40C 5000 mah batteries. The 40Cs fit better than the 30C in the battery tray. The 30C crapped out after very little use, the 40C batteries are still doing fine. I am planning on getting a pair of Gens Ace 5300s for next summer to try out.

You just can't run these below 3.4 volts under load(3.4 is suggested low voltage cutoff on these) Amazing how they are doing. Plus I need the little extra weight of the split pack because my ice 100 is mounted on the rear gyro tray.

The only "pop" we will probably get is while I pile drive it at high speed into the earth and the lipos vent fire into the sky. I think I will stick with the cheap ones for now, 30C should be okay. Anyone know where we can get one of those lexan blast shields like they use one Mythbusters? I think I have some old motorcycle helmets we can wear for my maiden.

I think I am going to get the Turnigy 500mah to start with, maybe 2 or 3 packs.

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...po%5FPack.html

or these

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...po%5FPack.html

I was thinking of these, shipped from China EMS its still less then shipped from USA warehouse including freight. I'm not in a big hurry anyway.

Thoughts?

Secondly I already have a couple of the IMAX B6 chargers that will do up to 6 cells and put out 5amps max. Should be okay for now huh? Will keep me from exceeding 1C charge and I can charge 2 packs at once. Should be ok for now huh?

Learn from our mistakes.

We've all used HK packs and have all (nearly) switched to Gens Ace. IMO btw.. nanotechs SUCK! Really bad.. do not go there.

And stick with Hyperion, iCharger and FMA chargers... iChargers most popular.

Here's my setup. I use 2 deep cycles to power it. You iMAX would painfully slow... hours... to charge packs. I can do 6 packs in 45 minutes at once.

Ok, xHeli has the Gens Ace 30c 5300 packs for $88 each. I grabbed 2 of them for now.

If I understand this right my charger puts out 5 amps. So, it should put about 5000mah into a pack in one hour. So I can charge 2 packs an hour since I have two chargers, right? No need to upgrade yet I wouldnt think.

You will love the packs. I thought you were going get the IMAX.. yeah if you already have them that's good. 2 per hour is like 1 per 1/2 hour. not that bad!

It also depends on the output wattage of the charger. You need 22.2V * 5A = 111W from the charger to be able to charge a 6S 5000mAh in 1 hour, that is, at 1C. As far as I know, the iMax B6 is a 50W charger, so you'll need more than 2 hours to charge a 6S 5000mAh pack with that charger.

Stil, it should be okay for now with 2 chargers running, considering I only have 2 packs ordered at this time. As time and money allows I will upgrade the charger, so I can spend the day at the field flying, not just 15 mins at a time. The 306B looks like a good choice, but the power supply is expensive. I might have to seek a more budget oriented approach, or troll the classifieds for a used setup.

Here is the power supply I use for home charging... it's only $50 (the 42A one) so not too bad.. it is a great power supply. http://www.feathermerchantrc.com/

If you wanted.. and had more packs.. you can still use low watt chargers for parallel charging.. it might take 6-8 hours.. but you could charge 6 packs at a time. The only advantage to the iCharger is speed. Yours will work fine.

Funny I think we took something similar out of our servers a while back at work when they upgraded them. I will ask the IT dorks what they did with them. Maybe worth a try.
