Default My homemade onboard generator mount for Helibug Trex 700 gasser

I wanted to mount the brushless motor to the start shaft because the motor in tail TT gear shaft doesn't look safe to me.

I tried the stock clutch One way bearing (OWB). No success because an OWB needs load to lock its shaft. The brushless motor can not provide such load. Therefore OWB stops holding the shaft over 7-8 k RPM. So the motor stops rotating. Battery drains, heli crashes. I have tried a few different OWB's. One of them is a BOCA high speed OWB (19k) but it still needs load to work at 13k RPM.

I find a good balanced (some of them are not balanced) 12mm hex wrench bit and 12mm T60-61 hex shaped aluminium rod. OD of the bit is +-0.05 18mm. I machined the alu rod until i get 5mm thickness. The root remains 12mm hex. I replaced the wrench bit with the OWB in the clutch. Replaced the machined alu part with the stock clutch start shaft.

You can name this as a winter project or an experiment. Either way this setup works good for now.

Edit:I'll add more photos for the rest.

Default Cool!

I always love to see people using the generator on their helis, makes me smile

If you have a hard time with it, I am having some CF mounts made for the trex 700 that will mount the generator right to the top of the start shaft. Hopefully they will be ready by the new year.

All the best and catch you later -- I'm in FL now and will be visiting Iskoos (Alex Oksit) who lives here but is originally from Turkey -- he was there this past summer for a couple of months, don't know if you guys know each other.

Mine holds just fine. Did you press the OWB out of the shoe assy and flip it over?

I'm running the Lynx Nitro Clutch and just ordered the gas version to try out. Now that my BHH 290RC has been upgraded to a 3D Max, I might need it.

Now you tell me!

Na, those are old photos. I go over everything with a fine tooth comb before the maiden and every time out to the field. Knock on wood, I haven't had anything fall off yet.

How's the weather in Fla?

Default Fl weather

Not too bad, was hot yesterday in the 80's then a cold front came through it got real windy and dark black clouds had to pack up quick and then the rain hit and it dropped to 68F and cooled from there.

Today in the 60's but mostly sunny. Tomorrow should be warmer and less wind hopefully but hey coming from MA its WARM!!

I'm in the process of converting my 700 gasser to fbl + beastx..

Also adding a generator too at the same time..

Checkout this one-piece cnc'd mount a guy on archeli made for me

It's the BeeKnees and even has raised arch sections on the side that fit perfectly into the arched slots on the helibug frame..

You have to file down the top of the frame a fraction for it to sit level - takes about 1min..

That's it - no alignment issues, no drilling any holes, etc... and has std 16mm and 19mm motor mount holes
predrilled in the top... sweeeet..

Double as a great frame brace as well..

He may be making more of them later!!!

If anyone is interested in one, I can find out how much he's going to charge and how many he can make..

Very nice jock. But be careful with that motor you are using. I have the same. The set screw on the bottom (on the up side in your picture) that holds the shaft it can be loosen easily because of vibration. Mine get lost. I'll machine a longer shaft for it.

BTW i am interested with the mount. Please keep me informed about price.

I had not heard of this before this thread.. very cool! at this point all my heli's are electric, but I am very curious about this! how much power does the generator put out? I understand that different motors will generate different amounts, but some examples of "x produces y" would be great!
I can see the top of my house with 1000's of little wind generators running!!! lol

I get 16-18 volts DC with this motor. I use 5.8v regulated.

Try to play with the body of the motor. Be sure if it not plays up and down. If it plays that means the set screw is loosening. It's a good motor btw. Nicely balanced.

Edit: Oh, badfrog i thought you were jockstrap.

Cool - thanks for that - I may remove it and reloctite it then..

I'll let you all know about the mount when I hear any news from the guy..

Good news on your success with this motor thou - it's very hard to find an appropriate KV one.. took me a while to decide on using this one..

PS: I started working on a generator for my Radikal G20 ages ago.. ended up putting it on hold trying to make a strong enough mount.. then ended up selling the radikal and getting the helibug. Been meaning to put a generator on the 700 ages ago but never got around to it due to problems making a good mount till a forum friend showed me his and I loved it so he made me one too..

@Azalyn - how have you mounted your generator ?
