stripped main gear bearing
I just put on a new main gear with bearing. 30 seconds in heli lowers to the ground. The one way bearing had slipped or something, and gotten hot. It's toast now. Was this a bad part, or maybe something I did wrong?

Sounds like a bad part to me. One thing you can do now is to ignore the stock ill made one ways and go to the upgraded version. Think of it this way, what is the cost of having to buy two of them to get the job done. Not to mention the hassle and downtime?
Get this one way and never look back. Or at least the second linked version. Plus, lightly lube them with triflow before installation. Another thought, and a better one is to replace the entire main gear with the microheli version. It has a much better one way already installed and isn't prone to slipping or having the case crack. They also rotate concentrically and do not wobble. http://helidirect.com/microheli-nsk-precision-oneway-clutch-bearing-hf0612-p-1286.hdx http://helidirect.com/microheli-oneway-clutch-bearing-hf0612-p-1199.hdx

I have used a little triflow on mine forever. Just don't use too much as it actually slows the roller bearings down. but no lube at all is sinful here. My heads take forever to spin down. Yesterday I was doing some setup work on mine, and once landed it took bloody forever for it to finally spool down to a stop before I could get to it and do some linkage adjustments. Even with pitch on the blades helping.

So I took the bad gear back to hobby shop. He said he's never heard of a gear being bad and slipping, but gave a couple dollars off of replacement.
One thing I recall is that it seemed tight. When spinning the gear it stopped pretty quick. Maybe something was off. I put new gear on, and it spins good now. |

main gear
To John I, I just posted about buying a new main gear with one way bearing where the bearing was not seated properly.Resulted in both gears getting hot and fusing together, motor and esc got very warm also. There is a bad production run of main gears out there.Sounds like you got one also.Mine was also tight and would not spin properly.Stopped very fast where my old one spun quite long.My LHS replaced the main gear for me.
