Default Sign of bad 5-in-1??? (UPDATE: it's not the motor...)

My MSR seems to be having some sort of power problem. I put a freshly-charged battery into it and throttle up but after getting off the ground, it goes into the LVC throttle-down mode. I check the battery voltage after this happens and it's still up at 4.0 or more volts.

Here's the history. This whole problem started off with a flight today that ran for about 1.5min when it normally runs for 5 minutes (150mAh battery). I thought it was odd and that maybe my battery wasn't fully charged or something so I got another 150mAh. With the second battery, I had a small power-down glitch mid flight but then it immediately went away and I flew the whole battery. However, on my third, fourth, and fifth battery, however, the rotor spins up for a few seconds, I can get it airborne, but then it hits the LVC power down and lands itself. I can repeat this process on the same battery but the voltage is nowhere near 3.8V or so.

I can't see anything that might be jammed. The servos seem to move okay, the main motor seems to spin up okay, the tail rotor appears to spin okay.

I thought it might be my DX6i since it was running low on charge so I got out the MLP4DSM TX that came with it and put totally fresh batteries into that and tried flying it. My first flight was once again just fine with no problems as far as I could tell. However, every subsequent flight has been the same problem above.

[EDIT] : it's not the motor. I got a new one and the helicopter had exactly the same problem.

Well, it doesn't look good. I called Horizon Hobby tech support and they said that this sounds like a speed controller on the 5-in-1 that's going bad. I guess I'll try sending it into Horizon Hobby to see if they can identify whether it's a defect or something. Otherwise...I guess it's time to get a new 5-in-1.

How long have you had the msr?

A month but it was bought used/refurbished so I don't know how old it is. I emailed the seller and talked to him about the history of the heli. It's only had its tail rotor replaced. He recommended I try swapping out the motor first.

Well, it's not the motor. I got a new motor from my LHS and tried it out but the helicopter behaved exactly the same way. Time to see if Horizon Hobby can help out.

So... what are the chances that Horizon Hobby is going to exchange an MSR 5-in-1 that I bought used on a refurbished heli from a non-Horizon Hobby dealer? Anybody want to guess the odds on that?

I'll just keep the conversation going. I just got off the phone with HH and frankly, there's no reason to send it in. They're not going to give me a replacement 5-in-1 and at best they'll just have me buy a new one (which I can do at my LHS) and then I've spent shipping costs (which I can save by going through my LHS).

Okay! Time to take matters into my own hands.

It's been suggested that my problem could be the power cable. It's an old helicopter and the power cable may have been flexed to the point that it's fraying internally. Thus when I spool it up it's trying to pull too much current through a very small set of wires that may have intermittent connectivity.

I'm going to first try to splice in a new power cable and see if that helps.

If it ends up being the board you can usually find a complete msr used for less than the price of a new board, make the first one a parts heli.

Really?? I'd love to know where you're looking. I've never seen anything on Ebay for that low price--at least once the bidding war starts! Or are you talking about folks selling their on helifreak?

Yeah... there's a reason for that. According to the seller:

This helicopter is being sold for parts, because the 5 in 1 is defective.

(Sorry--direct copy & paste---the formatting is from the ebay seller.)

Others say the 5-in-1 won't bind or it's intermittent...

I need a working 5-in-1.

(Thanks for taking the time to look, though. )

Bad news. I just tried replacing the power cable by cutting the stock one down to about 1cm or so from the 5-in-1 and soldering in a battery extension cable.

No change in condition. I think my 5-in-1 has a fried ESC.

EDIT : As I've got nothing left to lose, I decided to solder the new cable directly to the board. I remove the remnants of the old cable and attached the new one. Exactly the same problem as before.

Just saw one on Ebay....just heli, one batt, and old mcx charger for $30.

This is a E-Flite Blade MSR (Micro, Single Rotor). This is in great shape, flies really well. Good for beginners, or for indoor kicks!
Comes with Heli, LiPo Battery, and Charger.

No exaggeration, I have bought about 6 bnf msr's with an average price of $50.

Yep. Unfortunately that's not the selling price...that's what the guy wants as the opening bid. It's an auction.

Well, I'll certainly keep my eyes open. I'm about to pull the trigger on a new 5-in-1 but if I find a BNF sometime this weekend I'll do that.

Okay! I'll wait on the LHS solution and spend the weekend scouring ebay and looking into other options. Thanks for the advice, everyone.

Occ u see the item for sale as a buy it now. That's how I got my bird the other day. It had TBE issues that I fixed in ten minutes as an exercise before I partially disassembled it.

Thought about keeping it together, but I already have two in good flying shape. Good hunting.......
