I think my progression is more of a testament to growing up on video games, and trying things that I am really not yet supposed to be doing.

With that said, flips are very basic and easy. Once you do it in the sim, doing it in real life is no problem. Rolls are just flips, essentially. Hovering inverted (nose in) was fairly easy for me to learn. Push the cyclic forward, and the heli moves away from you. Push it towards you body, and the heli comes at you. It was simple to learn that way. The aileron is just flipped, so right is left and left is right. Hovering nose in inverted really isn't that hard.

Hovering upright with my nose to the left or right has posed more of a challenge than being inverted. Have you tried a sim yet?

I think it also helps if you have some experience flying aerobatic (4+ channel) airplanes. Flying forward figure 8s upright or inverted on a heli is a fairly natural progression from doing the same with an airplane. The control inputs are identical except for the throttle/collective. The thing about planes is that you have to keep it moving at all times, so you build up that ability to fly ahead of the aircraft rather than reacting to everything moment to moment. At least that's how I feel I've been able to progress faster than a lot of the people I fly with who started with and are only into helis.

I still love flying planes, but I've been really enjoying the challenge of learning new skills with the capabilities of helicopters. I get asked a lot if it's hard to switch between the two, but I really don't find that part too difficult. Somehow my mind is able to compartmentalize the two so they don't interfere too much.

Yep. I have a Phoenix. and I agree video games are a real good brain teaser for rc flying. For sure.. I have 1000+ hours of actual a/c flying with IFR , Multi ratings and we might be just over analyzing the tasks.. That is what you do when you fly the real stuff. A crash in that situation is serious :-)

Direct drive tail? How/why did you ditch the belt?

Default Mellow FPV key chain cam

First flight testing camera mount. It was pretty windy and that made me fly sharper turns than I planed, but it seems ok for a $8.00 camera.

Looking good Ed. Can't wait to get back out myself.

Three more packs the other morning. Just the same old basic stuff, flips, lops, rolls, a couple crummy half piro flips and one or two really crappy rolling tail slides.
Still, more fun than a barrel of monkeys if you ask me....

Blade 450X (13 min 39 sec)

Default 450X First Time

450X Maiden Flight (4 min 42 sec)

Well didn't go too bad but had a tip over landing on the 2nd battery Bent the main shaft but everything else looks OK. Should have her back up in a couple days. Very different from the nano Cpx's ive been playing with. Intimidation factor is HUGE but i can't wait to get out there again.

Good stuff jhan. You need to flip that thing into I/U and see just how locked in she gets. Congrats on your maiden. Hopefully many more successful flights ahead.

I heard that! Ive got about 200 flights now between the 300X and 450X with zero crashes! The only time I work on them is when I want to tinker with something I want to try out!

I'll admit, Ive spent quite a bit of time with building my 6HVU, and less time flying lately though. SOOOO worth it! Its done now and flying it is amazing!
