Default SHYs Landing Gear Mod

First of all this is not my own baby. I just wanted to illustrate it so that others can benefit from it.

There's lots of cool alternative landing gear out there too, by drilling some new holes they can easily be fit onto your heli.

The goal is to save the frame in a crash. Pr. default the skids are screwed into the frame and hence the small tabs on the frame have a tendency to break off in a crash.

So here is what you do (I'll see if I can put together a small video sometime...):

1) Find some cable ties, you need 8 of them. The smaller and weaker the better. We want this to be the weakest link in the chain.

2) Check if they fit through both the holes in the skids and the tabs in the frame. If not you need to drill the holes a bit bigger. Be careful so you drill at a slight angle when doing the frame. Otherwise you may end up with an ugly scar in the side of the frame.

3) Tread one tie from the top of the frame tab, then through the skid mount. Then take a second tie, and put the "square part" through the already in place tie. Tighten as hard as you can (use pliers). Then cut off both excess ends. Do this for all four tabs.

4) If it ends up a bit too loose, you can add an O-ring between the frame and skids, or onto the first tie before you enter the second one. That should give you a snug fit.

The end result will look like this:

Works fine on both the 300X and 450X.

Enjoy!

Cheers Rich

Addendum for you being a strong man:

A) Do NOT use pliers, gently pull the cable tie in place! Don't break off the tabs during the install...

This is more true than you think. I strip lots of things before I realize it.

This is a great idea if it works. Have you ever crashed like this?

Me and several others have been doing this for a while. Works just fine. But it's important to have tiny zip ties, not beefy ones

Of course there is absolutely no guarantees here! You may still be able to mess up your frame just fine!

Personally I just find it a bit annoying to swap the whole frame due to just a broken tab.

Very sharp idea. I've replaced components of my landing gear too many times. And two of the holes were stripped (from impacts). This just solved all kinds of problems for me.

Thanks SHY!

Hell, I bet I'll be flying like Bert in no time at all....

Cheers

If you crash all the time you could also transfer my Nano canopy pin mod to the skids... Might be too soft though...

Bonus tip: When you strip the treads in plastic, this works well: Straighten a paper clip, put CA on it, rotate inside hole, let cure overnight (no activator!)... and you get new treads!

I just purchased a modded 6s 450x from (snackdaddy) on this site & it looks like he had a custom 1/4" plexiglass bottom plate made for landing gear mounting. Frame tabs are dremmel'd off & plexiglass is screwed into bottom of frame. Feels rock solid! Also he included a set of align 500 landing gear that can mount to plexiglass giving it a 3" longer & 1 1/2" wider footprint for stability. Idk what these weigh stock but mine with a 6s 1300mah kong power battery ready to fly weighs in @ 874 grams...

That's a great idea, especially if the tabs are already broken off!

Talking Another frame saved!

OWB failed + stripped my main gear... no chance of auto'ing...

But got away with it fairly good though! As far as I can see only the OWB, main gear and the skids.

Zip ties to the rescue one more!

Lightbulb With O-ring added

Elegantly removes any slop!

These are the zip ties I'm using

I open the holes to 2mm using a drill. Make sure you drill at a slight angle so you don't "scar" the side of the plastic frame!

I'm glad you did the video because I was very confused by this complicated procedure. hehe. Kidding of course....nice job. It's always nice to put a voice with a name. I dig your accent....good times.

Question about your Microheli low profile landing skids for the Blade 400 (part # MHEB4006LP)... Do they actually lower the stance of the heli on the 300X or keep it about the same? I thought about getting some just to add some more bling and maybe some added strength, but I held off because I didn't want to worry about the tail not having enough clearance.

I think I remember you saying somewhere that these worked well on the 450X too. If so, can you comment on whether you used these ones for the B400 on the 450X or is it better to get the larger ones designed for the T-Rex 450 SE/XL/X?

They work excellent on both the 300X and 450X!

Direct fit on the 450, AFAIK the old 400 frame is the same as the one used in the 450X.

For the 300X the holes are a bit too wide, so you need to "move" them inwards a tad.

Even if they are very low, they tail is high enough up in the air on both models after installing them. And being wider as well they are way more stable than stock skids on takeoff and landings. The skids themselves are very long, so if you make them stick out a lot rearwards you get VERY little chance of the tail hitting the ground.

The only thing I don't like about them is that the color is a bit pale, could very well have had some more pop. They look like they've been lying in the shop windows for too long

Oh, and back out the set screws a bit before you enter the rails, otherwise you may scruff them on the screws! Put super glue on the end nubs before entering.
