Cool Tail freewheeling mod

Hello Warp
Hello Dominator

let me introduce another freewheeling tail on a 450 (with 350mm blades)

the build was easy and done in about 15 min without extra parts

I will document it soon.

Ok. Forgive my complete ignorance, but wht would you want a freewheeling tail?

Doesnt this cause control issues during an auto if you tail stops rotating (not that a 450 is very well suited to doing autos)? Or does this help maintain headspeed during an auto due to decreased drivetrain losses?

Again, just trying to understand the benefits of this (but it does look cool)!

Are you using a centrifugal force clutch for this? If so, auto's should work as long as the head speed stays up and keeps the clutch engaged, otherwise the tail and main need to be mechanically linked to have tail control in an auto.

... or hooked the tail up to the main gear before the one way bearing, the way the tail stops looks like it's attached to a motor.

My ancient nitro Shuttle had a non-driven tail when the engine wasn't running. It sucked. There's a reason they moved away from that design.

The main reason actually was to get better autorotations. I have those very very light warp blades on it and for me I find it not easy to do perfect auto. You can flare nice but you have nearly no time to land save because the energy dissipates fast.
Maybe it ist better with a TT or heavier blades but I wanted to get rid of thoes huge belt losses.

A Warp actually rotates fine...

On the other hand there is actually no reason to drive the tail in an auto with a 450!
You cant use it either. If you have a 600 or 700 you need it if you want to do stunts during autos.
If your tail servo fails you could theoretical land in an auto.

Well I actually tried to build it because I have fun to try things out. Dont say you all need that. I tell that it is possilble..easy.

I am now going out to test some autos

Well I'll be, would have thought that flaring would cause the tail to kick out more than that.

Learn something new every day I guess.

Why? There's zero torque on the head. The only thing you might see is a little CW rotation in the direction of the head due to the slight drag of the bearings. But, a 450 has absolutely no hang time at the bottom, so you don't see it because there just isn't time for any rotation to build.

Awesome work, looking forward to seeing mechanics behind it.

Noticed your coming in pretty hot for your autos. Do you think you've gained much extra flare time?

yes I did, thats the reason why I did that mod. Show me such autos with a 450 belt driven

Absolutely right.
If you get a high headspeed and flare a lot with heavy blades and use long hangtimes you get a rotation. Most I got is about a 180 . It depends on how you flare or your auto style.
But mostly then you have no ground speed anymore and it doesnt matter.

Lightbulb How is it done now...

  1. drill at least two fitting holes
  2. cut at this point
  3. those longer screws you will find used in the tail case. If you have none I ll be sure there are alternatives
  4. kind of critical is the distance between the main and tail gears. It depends on where you cut. I wouldnt cut flush again but it should be even. Else you can use 1-3 washers (used from the feathering shaft) to fit it
  5. screw both gears
  6. the glide shim is used as shown
  7. done

Thats the story behind that actually works well.
Standart handworks as grinding etc. should be used according to ones need.
My work isnt perfect at all, but I got no issues till now.

I hope you got the point because that is important

It is easy to do and brings a lot of fun - trust me!!!
