The MultiWii mode "horizon" is the perfect hybrid. Self-leveling at center stick, and a smooth ramp towards "expert" at full stick deflection.
Have you tried stagility mode? From what I understand it is just what you are looking for - high bank angles of the agility mode with the Safe mode when near hover. https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=597395

I fly the 180QX aggressively in agility mode and am keeping a hopeful eye on this thread for next season. I have an essential tremor in my hands that makes solid soldering impossible.

I like it! Zippy little bugger

What I dont like so much: the SAFE mode is quite limiting. The maximum inclination angle isnt enough to fly hard maneuvers. Also, I see it wobble when cranking the sticks hard enough.
The latter might get better when replacing the motors, but the SAFE mode wont.
I think I will end up putting an AlienFC into it and fly it in horizon mode.
Should fly a bit like this then:
Latrax Alias maximised - The Hacklias V2 on Vimeo

But since it weight almost 20g less than the Alias, I expect more

Have you had a chance to put the AlienFC in the 180QX yet?

CL-0820-17 "Dark Edition" in the 180qx are amazing coupled with higher C rated batteries.

Micro Motor Warehouse is a top notch company with great customer support. High fives, Benedikt!

Cheers, Binski!

And yes, I have put the Alien on a 180 in the meantime

Yes, we will make more. But I will drop the coil speed to 15.000Kv. Insane power caused too much trouble with the 180.
If you can solder, you can grab some of our Alias motors (0820-15-11T) and wire them up yourself.
New motors with suitable plugs will take a few weeks!

Hi. This may sound a noob question but my motors arrived and I've tried to fit them but with the adapter on the plugs I can't get the casing back on to hold the motor down. Do I need to dremel the hole bigger on the side or am I doing something wrong?

They fit right in, like the stockers. I assume you are so in something wrong, but I'm at a loss what that could be. You got a few pics?

Out of curiosity, why did the -17 motors cause trouble with the 180qx? I just got one secondhand and am thinking about getting some upgraded motors. And stagility mode on the 180 is exactly as you described horizon mode on the other controller.

Just couldn't get the adapters to fit in and the plastic covers to click over to hold the motors down. An excuse to use my new dremel anyway and now it flies great. Thanks Benedikt

The pinions are brass and a little more difficult to pull. I believe that Benedikt (Micro Motor Warehouse) will sell you a set of nylon/plastic pinions separate from the motors.

I actually have a set of slightly used 0820-17 "dark series" motors that I am going to throw on my MQX. This thread makes me excited to get them on there.

EDIT: Crap, I didn't realize how old this thread was...

Sorry, missed that
The FC on some 180s randomly shuts down when you punch the throttle with the -17s. Something on the FC doesnt seem to be able to deal with the higher current. We suspected the battery connector. Changing that (resoldering thicker wires and new connector straight off the board) helped in some but not all instances.

BTW, what is the full load amperage of the -17 motors? Maybe they are exceeding the C rating of the stock batteries? Sent stock 180 batt is 500mAH with an alleged 25C rating, where the LaTrax Alias runs a 650mAH with a alleged 20C rating.

The thing is, I've heard from more than one guy that the stock eFlite batteries are rated a little optimistically in terms of discharge rate.

The -17s top out at around 3A. So 12A in total. That brings most 1S micro cells to the limit, but I have run the same motor/battery combo on various FCs, and only the 180QX FC had these issues. I have the feeling the FC does not have a problem with voltage sag but rather with the current throughput. So a better battery makes it worse. Less demanding motors were the only solution to the black box problem I could come up with..

Ah, I see. That is pretty solid evidence. Perhaps the FC's choke point is in the transistors and they could be paralleled or outfitted with a higher spec replacement. Any way you look at it though, that's far beyond the scope of a beginner.

This is similar to what I experienced running a Nano FPV FC on my Micro-H frame with Parrot Rolling spider props. Even with upgraded 6A FETs, it would shut down after less than a minute of hovering in place. The FETs themselves were fine, so something else on the board was clearly having issues.
