Default Whiplash sprag bearing

Hi Guys,

Just for information.

I am using the FE 422 Z2 (specified up to 13200 rpm and 30 Nm) with a RL 422 instead of the cap, which acts as additional support on the upper side. Fits tightly and nicely and works perfect, way better than the original. Wondering why MA did not use this disign.

Bought it from WAELAG, was about 30 Euros for both plus shipping.

Kind regrads
George

What cap? you removed the brass cap on the sprag? and used those two new parts?

Hi Andrew,

Sorry for the delayed answer.

Yes, I took off the brass-cap and the original sprag and put in the FE422 Z2 at the bottom and the RL 422 on the upside instead.

The RL 422 bearing stabilizes the pinion way better than the brass-collar. The FE bearings need to be supported on both sides in order to funktion well. I think this is part of the problem with the original design.

After studying the specs of the bearings, I was calling up an engineer at GMN (very friendly and helpful people there) and discussing the sprag-issue a couple of weeks ago since they do no longer produce the "S" version of the bearing which I originally wanted to try.

Just make sure not to use too much lubricant or you will have a mess a little drop from time to time does.

Kind regards
George

Third Spragg bearing failed yesterday and this one has only had a couple of hours of running.

I have got a Noway setup here to try but I would first like to know how the last modification using the slightly better spec Spragg is working out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgJm...mjYRgVfM6FHF-w

Would prefer to use a oneway if possible.

I would if I could find a supplier who will sell me the parts.
Can't find them in the UK and have emailed the places mention by Oldgasser with out any reply so far

I would like to try the spragg with the top roller bearing if possible.

Anyone know of any online places that sell GMN bearings who would ship to the UK?

It's not very often I make long International phone calls to the US but have just come off the phone from talking to Kristine regarding the bearings.
Very busy with these by the looks of it.

Emailed her with confirmation of the part numbers and now waiting on her for prices along with the shipping costs to the UK.

Parts arrived this morning in the end from Germany via a UK supplier.
Need to strip the Whippy down a bit now but it will have to wait until I have come back from holiday.

Finally got to test the FE422 Z2 and RL 422 setup a few days ago.

Hovered up and the clutch was slipping again in less than five minutes use.So a no go!

I can't spend any more time trying to get this to work so even though I have spare clutch bells and even a 'Noway' set up here I am calling it a day.

Whiplash has been stripped down to the airframe tonight and will be hopefully sold along with all the spares I've accumulated.
