Default Leap Crashing!

So, I will start by saying I absolutely love flying this thing! Tons of fun and a nice break from helicopters. I have been flying helis for 8 years or so and very rarely crash these days, knock on wood...

But, I can't seem to keep my Leap in the air! I've had 5 crashes so far and only owned it for a couple weeks. In fact, I bought a backup machine just to minimize down time and I crashed that one on the second flight so it's now just a parts donor. Most of the crashes I can attribute to dumb thumbs or bad luck (motor came unplugged) but the last one today was really random. Just seemed to lose control and it drove in.

On a positive note, Assurance RC has been awesome when needed so far and shipped me a replacement gyro board at warp speed.

Really bummed right now and about to place another parts order. Is it just me?

If you're having orientation trouble (like I was) - Put some lights on it! Makes a world of difference.

Also, I am convinced there is a bug that randomly one or more motors could fail to reverse. I had it happen to me, on a hard positive to negative jam - instead of pulling out it started spiraling to the ground..

Hopefully will be fixed in future firmware release.. But It is a fun quad to fly!

I am the same as you! I just have the worst problem with orientation with these things. The lights do help a lot.

That's my video. The problem was the gyro board. Assurance RC sent me a new one and its good as new.

Ok now I'm just pissed.

I got 8 or 10 good flights in a row and BAM it falls out of the sky for no apparent reason. Fixed it up and came back out, BAM again!

These are NOT orientation issues or dumb thumbs. The thing just decides to stop flying...

Are your ESC's flashing while flying? Or flashing out of rythm?

THat's what mine did. I went through four ESC's! Looks like the replacements have been OK.

Actually yes, I did notice the ESCs were flashing right before the first crash today. I have another Leap which I just repaired so I'll check to see if it's flashing.

How do you know which ESC is bad?

I know the ESCs should be solid while flying.. One of mine started flashing in flight and failed about three minutes later... I knew which was bad because only one was flashing, then that arm would dip every few seconds just for a split second.. Then it died.

Are you using sats? you may want to try rebinding.

I'm using a single satellite and a DX7. I have two Leaps with different sats and they've both had random unexplained crashes.

I'm going to try two sats after I repair this latest crash. Looks like I toasted a couple motors on impact this time.

I am only asking all this because I just bought a used one. One other thought would be the C rating of your packs. I know regular multicopters can use 15 to 20c packs, but I believe the Invertix and leap need 40 to 60c.

So this happened again - twice today.

It seemed to happen when I was near center throttle and switching back and forth quickly, but shallow movements, not the whole stick travel.

Once it happened and I was high up, it flipped around on a diagnal, and I was able to catch it and keep flying. The second time it happened, I was close to the ground and had a mild crash - bending one boom and no other damage.

I really hope they can identify this - either it's FC bug, or ESC bug.. .Either way, hopefully they come up with a fix.. I'll gladly do the R&D if they want to send me some parts! hahaa

I hate stuff like this, because now I don't trust the quad. I'll still fly it, I just won't be as spirited with it.

I started flying mine with one sat and about the 4-5th flight it feel out of the sky but the sat was to the rear when it happened so I though I may have blinded it. I came in and bound 2 sats to the unit with one on each end and zero issues since. It is hard with the big squares of carbon not to blind the sat in flight . My thoughts anyway and it has not had the slightest glitch since , glad it only cost me one prop

Also remember that most sats only bind to one wire.

The lights are from Helidirect, RJX brand I think.

I have now had several dozen crash free flights. Pretty sure the problem was damaged escs. These are very fragile and they can become unreliable after a crash. Keep an eye out for blinking LEDs in flight. This means that an esc needs to be replaced.
