Default Looking at KDS but have no idea what is good anymore!

Hey guys,
I've been out of the heli hobby for almost 4 1/2 years and I'm wanting to get back into it. I've obviously missed out on alot of new helis and new electronics. When I last left Vbar was still big, the Futuba FBL was still pretty new. The Goblin Heli was just coming out and KDS was just starting.

I really like a few different helis out there one being the KDS 5.5. The other heli I really like is the HD Cell 500. Can you guys please tell me what you know about the KDS helis? Are they any good? How is the build quality? What electronics are good nowadays? What FBL systems are good? Any help is appreciated.

I don't own a 5.5, but I looked at an HD Cell and I was warned by several big names to steer clear

Yup, really liking mine.
It's a simple, strong build.

Drive train is solid and tail gears are strongest I've seen.
I am currently stretching mine to 12S/600mm so we'll see how it holds up to the extra load and abuse.

I am now running mine with BeastX and like the simplicity and ease of tuning.
Flew V-Bar and Demon in the past and felt I was always chasing a good tune.
They're all good units, Spartan too and many like Brain/iKon. I have no experience with the later.

I would have a look at the 5.5 super combo, add in a 100-120A ESC and your good to go. If you have a bigger budget there are lot's of nice electronics to choose from these days.

Sounds good Gimpy, I appreciate the FBL advice as well.

The 5.5 is a solid build and handles a crash very well (have put mine in about 3 times and minimal damage to repair). As for the FBL unit I have tried a few (beastx,ikon,demon,vbar,3gx,spartan,gpro) and they all fly well but I ended up sticking to the KDS ebar v2.

I'm leaning heavily towards the 5.5 now. Seems like everyone likes it from what I've seen online. Just need to figure out what electronics I'm buying now.

I would recommend the 7.2 over the 5.5, but they are different size classes.. For the 5.5, do note the tail hold issue with 92mm blades - you have 2 options : use 105s or use a longer horn with a 22mm hole (instead of 20mm). I've tried both, the longer horn option is probably better since you won't have to worry about scraping the tail blades when landing.

Other than that, the 5.5 is great overall and should serve you well.

edit: forgot about a third option, increase the headspeed over 2500RPM.

Could you please explain the longer horn option I don't understand what you mean. I have a preowned 5.5 on the way and haven't heard about a tail holding issue. But I plan on using lower head speeds for longer flight times so this may be a issue for me. Although I am sport flyer just starting inverted flight so I'm not doing anything to demanding.

The default length to position the ball links on the servo horns in the manual for the tail is 20mm. When running 2400RPM and below, that results in very slow tail wags even with your gain set at max. The solution to that if you want to keep your headspeeds down below 2400 is to either increase the horn length and move the ball up to 22mm or to use bigger blades. I used to do the latter, until i trashed my heli and my LHS was out of stock with 92mm blades - so i bought some edge 105s and stuck with them instead. With the 105s, my clearance to the ground is less than 1cm, I've already chipped the blades landing and touching abit of coarse dirt - now i'm very careful to land with the nose tipping very very slightly forward to keep the tail off anything until it loses power.

Thanks for the explanation. I got my 5.5 last night and got it put back together. Still need the electronics so it'll be awhile before I get it in the air. Man it's a lot bigger than my Gaui X3.

The 5.5 is the best heli KDS makes. It gave me no trouble and just flew awesome flight after flight. I sold mine to fund some other projects, but now I'm thinking that was a mistake. Time for anther one I think!
