Wonderful

The last time Obama was in town, I received a "no-fly" notice from the AMA.

It did NOT buzz the president. The guy was flying and asked to land. He cooperated with the secret service and it turned in to a non event.
The secret service was happy and the guy got to go home.

No big deal.

So the way I look at it is the media is giving drones a bad name. Always making it out to be more than what it really is.

The title makes it sound like a drone buzzed Obama while he waved from a convertible to crowds of people lining the streets.

Should be illegal for the media to lie.

They have been doing that for a while now. Thus all the b.s. that has ensued

It is really going to get interesting when and if Amazon and whoever else that is foolish enough to think they can deliver packages and do with a quad, drops one or two quads on a house or a car. News headline: "How could this happen with the government regulating them?"

Something I've noticed is that these kind of incidents almost invariably involve RTF appliances. I wonder why?

Guy was flying his Phantom at the beach, the presidents motorcade approached, so he was asked to land, which he did.

end of story.. nothing to see here... move along.

Why an RTF? Probably because there are 10 or even 100 RTF's for every custom built heli, so statistically whet do you expect?

And that is indeed exactly what happened, although he probably should have been aware that there's an island wide ban on flying anything on Oahu while the president is in town.

I was asking the question somewhat rhetorically, but I suspect that while you are right, there's a little more to it than just that.

A genuine question from someone from outside the USA.....
Is that flying ban well publicised? Does the 'regular guy in the street' who maybe got a DJI Phantom for Christmas know that, or could he reasonably be expected to know that? Are there warning on the radio and TV?

The argument i hear elsewhere is 'The AMA send no fly warnings out'... but I don't suppose that guy had even heard of the AMA, let alone joined, so how would he know?

It's a good question you raise. The local TV stations here actually do announce it, but it's buried in the rest of their coverage of the presidential vacation. Part of the problem is exactly what you mention about the AMA. Most people buying these as appliances probably never read up on sites like this, let alone ever join the AMA. Maybe now, with the new FAA registration rules, people will be better informed of these things since the FAA can now send out email NOTAMs for RC fliers I suppose. I sometimes kind of wish that the more capable multirotors were not available as RTF. And yes, I know that sounds terribly snotty, but how many RTF 700 size helis do you see out there? My feelings about it are really mixed.
