Default Build thread MD8N2

Well time has come to start the build. It's getting ys120srx x2, 3 bladed head and tail. Yes not a typo, 2 ys120srx. There is going to be lots to fabricate on this thing so stay tuned and check back every now and then and I will upload more pictures as the build continues.

The first and I think the hardest thing to accomplish here is how to make the motor pinion mesh with the herringbone main gear. All add on parts are from a Trex 700n, so I can get them most anywhere, and won't cost me an arm and a leg. I plan on turning down the trex pinion and boring out the MD pinion so it will slide over and I can weld the two together. The MD pinion is about an .125 thousands taller than what the stock trex pinion will allow, so some material will need to be removed.

All in all it should be a fun project, which will consume a ton of time. I hope to maiden it this fall, if all goes well. We will see what I can accomplish.

Hope you enjoy,

Derek

It's been on hold because I had to get some other things taken care of, non heli related. I plan on starting up on it again this week. Working on getting the MD pinion attached to the turned down trex shaft. It's going to take some magic, but we will see how it goes.

First go around with the pinion didn't work. Got to get in the machine shop and work it some more. Stay tuned.

2nd go at it worked. Just need to figure out if I want to put a weld on the pinion or make it a press fit... hum, decisions.

Matt, gonna need another pinion soon.

How are you mounting the motors? One behind the main shaft and one in front? Exhaust pipes on both sides?
Awesome project! Can't wait to see it fly

The plan is to have both engines out in front and fuel tank(s) in the back. For the exhaust I'm thinking about having both pipes on the bottom, between the skids. All this is of course, just thought for now, until the clutch stacks come together.

Chuck, in time it will. Stupid job is getting in the way of my hobby.

Yup, I know what you mean. I'm waiting for the postman, too, but I also have to contend with the dreaded customs man, sigh. Very distinctive build as there are not too many twin motor designs out there driving one main rotor. Nice.

+1 . A single nitro engine MD is rare to begin with , I've only ever seen one nitro powered MD and another turbine powered MD . A twin nitro engine MD will definitely be unique , maybe possibly the only one of its kind at the moment .

First things first Chuck. I need to finish this. lol. I'm not real big on gasser. I work on gas engines every day so I don't have a really big interest in them. However if it was something exotic, like a turbo or supercharged application, it might peak my interest.

Hmmm, how about a turbine? That would be quite the accomplishment.

LOL ya that was just a general statement not really directed at you doing a gasser, you have your hands full with this project. Several new conversions for gassers available but not for the MD yet.
