Default VCopter thread

Hey guys, I know I promised a VCopter thread so here it is! So let me first say, I am a relative noob when it comes to quads, setups, and tuning. This would prove to be the perfect testbed for me as I would experience a lot of what new people would as well.

Equipment:

I fell in love with ehe Neato frames Dallas 220 BUT they didn't have any of those in stock so I got a Neato180 and found the equipment for it. This is what I chose:

(1) Neato Frames 180
(4) Voodoo quads MR 2204-2650KV motors
(4) Little Bees Pro 20 amp ESCs
(1) Pyrodrone run cam
(1) Lumineer 600 mw Video transmitter (found out this was overkill and a 200mw would be just as good)
(1) Maytek power distribution board
(1) VBAR NEO with Copter and rescue (not in 3D mode yet)
(4) Gemfan Bull Nose 4045BN props
(1) Fat shark antenna
(1) Extension

Goggles:
(1) Fat shark HD 2 goggles
(1) UBAD LaForge Video rx with diversity antenna
(1) Immersion RC Diveristy antenna
(1) Mad Mushroom antenna

Build:

Building a quad is a tight event. I was able to get all the ESCs inside the frames as well as the PDB and the VTX and camera. The build went well, the only hiccup was programming the ESCs. I got some help from Brian Phillips (this guy KNOW how stuff!), I got the ESCs programmed and then it was off to set the NEO.
Surprisingly it took no time to get the NEO setup! Once you plug the ESCs into the correct ports according to vstabi.info, then it is just setup of the gains and such.
I chose to go with the default gains and use the transmitter to adjust in the air. The stock gains were way too high, I had to lower them about 20 points but now it is solid. Climbs are hard and fast and decelerations are quick and precise.
The Video is one of the coolest things going, I can see how they are addictive and with the diversity setup, I can fly virtually anywhere without a loss of signal.
Here are some pics and I will add some later:

In terms of video performance you will get an improvement by fitting a mad mushroom on the model as well.

Absolute rank amateur on quads here, just thinking about starting.

I've not read about the NEO but on other FCs you are able to program the ESCs through them. It will make things so much easier when an update comes along that you want to try.

I too am just starting, and while I do not have a VControl radio, I found this blog to be helpful in getting into the technical parts of this multirotor thing.

Here's an article on how to program BLHeli firmware ESCs through Cleanflight without having to go through the hassle of building, soldering, flashing, and using an Arduino nano unit to program each ESC: https://oscarliang.com/flash-esc-via-cleanflight-fc/

You can dig around to find more information on ESCs and other bits of cutting edge developments.

I'm definitely interested in seeing other heli guys get into this FPV stuff, it's one hell of a rabbit hole, and seeing a heli-pilot's perspective really helps.

With the NEO you cannot program the ESCs though it, you need to do them separately and then plug them in. Everything else is done in the transmitter.
As far as updates go, do you mean an ESC update?

With the flight controller I have been looking at it is possible to do a firmware update and also a setup on the ESCs through its USB connector.

Thanks for the links Fauropitotto, I will take a look.

Yes, the NEO does not do that (yet maybe?). I will talk to to the Rainer at IRCHA and see if that is a possibility in the future

I'm curious is vcopter only supported on the neo or is it like vplane any old vbar supports vcopter? I know I'm being lazy and not checking vstabi but I'm here so I figured I'd ask

To bad would be a nice cheap option for quads. I guess the hardware is limiting on the older ones.

I would like to put a Neo on my Invertix 400. The ESCs are already reversible so I shouldn't have to reprogram them should I ? Can you use rescue feature on a quad ?

Well I bought another VBar Neo Vlink with Rescue to put on the Invertix 400. I was thinking I am going to install a U/I Sensor with it.

Looking forward to trying it out.
