Default YS96 Tareq and Power Pipe Mounting

This might be a dumb question, but I've never owned a YS engine before. I have a YS 96 & matching power pipe, but what is the proper way to seal the pipe to the engine? I'm used to my old OS91 that had an actual gasket, but this only came with o-rings.

thank you in advance

I clean the surface and apply a small amount of this stuff. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I think it's way better than high temp RTV. And is similar to what Tim Jones uses. Just a different brand.

This is what I have always used ever since Tim Jones recommended it. Like OTS said, only a small amount is needed.

What's wrong with RTV?
I put it on my 91 SRX the first time and it still there. I never tear off the header though. I presume you are talking about hard mounted pipe. In this case epoxy or RTV are both messy

You can get aluminum gaskets from eBay or hobbyking. They don't fail like fiber gaskets, and I much prefer them over messing around with any sort of goopy stuff.

Do they make a real solid seal? I would think not with metal on metal..

They are soft aluminum, so they squish a little when you crank the bolts down nice and tight. They seem to seal well to me, provided you're starting with nice surfaces on the motor and muffler flanges. If your mating surfaces are kind of jacked up, then you probably do want to go with some sort of RTV or epoxy to fill the gaps.

It helps to run a very fine file over the mating surfaces of the pipe and engine to knock down any high spots. I had a few issues with the Hatori on my gasser not sealing up properly and after doing this, no more leaks and loosening up bolts. Used Permatex copper gasket sealer as well.

I am still mostly a nitro n00b, but the opinions I heard was that it can be brittle over time with pieces coming off. Since it's a 2 stroke engine, air is pulled into and out of the pipe. So the RTV can get sucked in and possibly do some damage.

No idea if it's true.

So I went with the high temp putty epoxy. It's a PITA to roll together to mix the activator, and avoid skin contact. Then apply it very thinly to the the interface. So that very little squishes out. Then I mate the pipe barely snug, and let it cure an hour. Then a little more snug but not tight over night. By morning the stuff is rock hard. I crank it down.

Not the easiest process. I would take a $10 gasket in a heartbeat. But seems to work.

I prefer metal gaskets. That goopy stuff gets in the engine n blows back through the carb n the one way. It's just not worth the risk when a metal gsk is available. IMHO

On Ebay, I found these two:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/322163403835

http://www.ebay.com/itm/262421120911

So the aluminum one is better? Or the fiber one?

Here is where I learnt. In the second half of the movie, Bobby shows the job with RTV. You will see that he put a very thin layer of stuff. He also let it cure before mounting the pipe.

Now I had my engine hard cut twice in flight. Once I'm loading it hard over 3m. Now have to look at the 50 things that can cause it. Time for more electric time. Nitro break.

Git rid of the YS and buy an OS 105. I guarantee you your problems will go away.

Power or reliability, take your pick. If your not getting the same power out of the 105 your doing something wrong.
