Protos 500 battery selection
I did some search but seems like most of you guys do crazy 3d flying. I am looking to purchase an affordable battery that can handle some light flying (practice hovering, some forward flight, slow flip, roll, inverted hover). I do not want to buy expensive batteries at this point because I know that I don't need the high end baterry for a while. (I know expensive batteries also last longer but I prefer having more cheap batteries so I can have more flying time =) Once my skill gets better, I will invest in better charger/supply/battery
Any batteries you recommend for me? I see that Hobbyking has a bunch of selections but not sure which one is good for some light flying.

Zippy 2700mah are a decent but cheap option. They're one of the HobbyKing choices, Turnigy's also have a decent reputation.

The packs have no more than 40 flights on them probably less. They are however only the 25C variation. I believe there are 35C ones as well. They are cheap, I will buy something better once they are through though. They have one big advantage: They are not only cheap but also light. The P500 with 2700mah Zippys is one light heli!

I would buy 2650 Turnigy's, and I would buy the 40C versions - whilst you might be quite happy with the 30C, the 40C will be "working" less hard and will last longer, and they only cost an extra $10.

Is this the one you guys recommend? I am going to order 5 batteries so just wanted to make sure I am getting three right one. Does this battery fit well on proto 500 with canopy on? Thanks

If you just wish to fly sport as you describe, you can fly with much lower head speed. I fly 1400-1700 with 4s 2700-3300mah 30c packs. The machine is very quiet and very smooth at these headspeeds. Halo 450 blades. Just food for thought if you haven't considered low headspeed flying.... HAV

Can it be run with 15t pinion Stock motor? I have two Protos 500, one is cf frame stretched and the other is plastic standard. How do you adjust the headspeed? Do I just need to lower the throttle curves?

In my experience 40C Turnigy give the best bang for buck regarding HK batteries, packs last at least 100 cycles and IR stays reasonable even on older packs.

You will need to adjust the curves. Just make sure your ESC has active freewheeling for the lower settings. If possible, bum a couple 4s packs and try it out first. Remember to check your CG. Low headspeed is a different way to fly. Some like it, some get bored quickly with it. Either airframe will work. In general the longer the blade the lower the headspeed that you can fly. Adjust your curves until you achieve the headspeed that feels right for your style. HAV |

That being said I guess I am harder on my P500 than I thought I am when I read people fly it at 1600 RPM and 4S. Currently flying it at 2600 (stretch but 430 blades - had lower headspeed when using 480 blades) and considering cranking it up some more.

For the US, the Glacier packs are a pretty good deal and are nice quality.
http://www.buddyrc.com/glacier-30c-2600mah-6s1p.html And yeah, from hobbyking, I would only use the turnigy blues in 30 or 40C. I've had some zippy flightmax and they were decent, but didn't last very long.
