RC Helicopter terminology
I've been flying RC planes for about 10 years but I'm just getting started in the helicopter world. Reading through various heli forum threads, I see an awful lot of terminology and abbreviations that I haven't run into before. I have found a few web sites that list 5 or 6 basic terms. Is there one site that has a comprehensive heli dictionary?

I'm not aware of a single, comprehensive glossary - although that doesn't mean there isn't one somewhere.
My suggestion would be to scan the stickies in this forum; they're full of useful information that will give you a better understanding of much of the vocabulary and related concepts. If you have specific questions, a web or forum search will often provide plenty of links. If you're still not sure at that point, a question posted here will usually get a quick answer. By now you will have noticed that your posts are delayed for mod review. That can be annoying, but it doesn't last long. Once it's clear you're a real hobbyist, your account will get full privileges and the delay goes away, as well as the requirement to do the captcha. Welcome to HF. I started flying helis last year after having done fixed wing a long time ago. Lots of fun, and it does take some research and patience.

There is a Glossary...although it's a bit aged and is not all-inclusive
https://www.helifreak.com/faq.php?fa...faq_hfglossary It's in the FAQ heading at the top left of any HeliFreak page...right beside User CP |

Yes, the jigsaw puzzle and the delay between writing and posting is frustrating. Thanks for the info on links.

List
Never seen that list before. Pretty good. Just for shits and giggles I looked for cyclic. Not there.LOL.
Cyclic is the angleing of your swashplate. Like up and down elevator on an airplane would be fore and aft cyclic. It would work similar in forward flight but in hover will tilt the heli forward and aft. Same with left and right cyclic, with sideways movement of the heli it can cause the heli to climb or descend. Then you have to throw pitch angle into all these variables which can reverse the results of inherent cyclic input. Fun huh? |
