Default P380 pinion and headspeed...

Hi All,

I'm setting up my 380 now, and wonder about the pinion size. The stock 21T with my 925kV motor looks like it wants to be too high (favors 32-3400 rpm HS according to Mr Mel), but what is your experience? Is the stock 21T based upon selection of the 890kV X-Nova?

What HS range do you like? For reference, I flew my G420 at 28-2900 and my G380 at 3000-3100. I would rather have flown with somewhat less, but that heli never felt like it had enough hang time and compared to my big birds I didn't like the feel of tic tocs at those relatively high HS. Wants to fall.

How is Protos 380 at about 26-2800? Where does it "come alive?"

Thanks.

I started out with the 22t when the 380 first came out with that same motor. It does very well 2500-3000 with it. I recently switched to the 21t pinion and have been flying mostly 2450 with it lately and it does a great job power and efficiency wise.

Since this motor is a little oversize for the weight of this heli you can run it well below the normal suggested values.

*** EDIT ** Just saw you have the Tareq motor 925kv. Thats mega overkill haha but I'm sure it will have plenty of reserve torque and do just fine.

Thanks. Mine is the kde, and it JUST fits. I'll try the 21T and see if it runs cool enough.

I measured about 3700rpm at full throttle when calibrating my Edge Lite 50 and Brain, with the 890kV Xnova and 21T pinion. Iíve set up 2400, 2700 & 3000 on each bank. With an advance of 8 degrees on the motor timing, it doesnít register more than 38degrees on the mosfet according to the ESC telemetry and the motor is only a little bit warm.

Mind you, thatís only from todayís maiden flights so Iíve hardly enough data to go from lol

Nice. That sounds good.

I'm not sure my motor fits. Its 42.1mm in diameter, and rubs the lower frame when i pull the belt tight. Tarek xnova is supposed to be 40.5, which would also be tight. I wonder if I've got something wrong here?. This is a "new, almost done" bird that I'm going through.

Anyway I might buy the xnova 2820, once I confirm that this thing was assembled correctly.

I think some others have removed a little off of the from landing gear brace, to give clearance. Mine has about 1mm clearance with the belt giving about 4mm deflection when pushing it moderately with a finger

You may just have to shave some plastic from the landing gear maybe?

Me like Dremel.

Good call. I was thinking that part was anodized but it's plastic. Yeah it looks like I can open it up a bit can't I...

Thanks

I'm using the stock pinion and the xnova 890kv motor. I fly mostly at 2500 and some at my next highest headspeed, which is 2700 I think. (or maybe 2800). It tic tocs just fine at either speed, but a little better at the higher speed of course.

Thanks. Good info.

I ordered a 20T which still lets me turn 3000+ if I want, but now that I shoehorned the motor in (which worked with minimal Dremel action), I think it will be too small in diameter to get the belt tight.

I can't wait to fly this little guy, but I'm in a waiting game since my batteries may be lost in the mail. No tracking update since 10/13 and they were supposed to arrive on Tuesday...

I think 21T is the smallest 5mm pinion with a lip/guide for the belt, smaller pinions may need the idler assembly/bits to be installed on the motor mount plate assy?

Protos 380 Pinion 5.0 20T - MSH41222 - LowerHeli.com

It doesn't have the flange, but appears to exist. Maybe I don't understand what you're saying...

Can that idler assembly be installed when using a 5mm motor? That might help all around if it got the motor a little farther back in the frames. (Protos newb!)

Well, I set it up and ran on the bench and it seems great. 2500 RPM was below VBar gov lower limit with the 21T, but it was really smooth and sounded great at 3000. Guess I'll try that to start.

Wow - this thing weights 1385g with 1900mAh battery and blades. What am I doing with a KDE motor in it? You guys are definitely right about the disk loading!

Hope it's nice tomorrow.

Yeah kde motor is definitely beyond overkill unless you're flying speed. Xnova 2820 is already unboggable and 35g lighter

Well, I'll let you know how it works. It has the undeniable advantage of already being owned.

If I need to get a smaller one I will, but who knows - it might just be fun.

I had time for a test flight at dusk, and all I can say is "sweet!"

Incredibly quiet heli! 12 degrees was nice and peppy but very smooth and controllable. It was increasing HS on climbouts, and I turned down the tail gain 3 times. Man, it mini-autos GREAT!! I did about 10 of those.
