Need Help with a TRex 700E
I just registered as a user and I'm hoping I can either get direct answers or at least be pointed in the right direction. I've already done some looking around but I'm finding I have two more questions every time I find one answer.
I bought a TRex 700E that was used. The guy I bought it from has had it for 6 or 7 years and sold it to me because it has just been gathering dust for the last 2 years. It looks like most of the parts are stock. So far I know it has a Futaba GY601 Gyro setup, a Castle Phoenix HV85 ESC and a Scorpion HK-4035-500KV motor and a Spektrum AR7000 DSM2 reciever. I have it bound and running with my Spektrum DX6e and have done two gentle hover flights with two 4s packs in it. I'm wondering what all I should be looking over before I go any farther with flying it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance! |

There is a comprehensive checklist in the sticky section above. Here is the link. Common causes of catastrophic failure include: 1. Lack of loctite at a single point of failure, such as a set screw, or bolts in the servo/head area. You can check these by trying to back each one out with two finger pressure on your driver. (Two fingers shouldn't break any loctite that's there, but will let you know if it isn't.) 2. Bad solder connection in the power system. Your motor hasn't cut out, so check the temp of the solder joints after your next flight. A really hot joint is one indicator of a problem. 3. Servo failure. Main risk is with servos that have been crashed a lot. If you bought the heli from a friend, you can find out. Also, since this is an older FB heli, I wonder whether the servos are plastic or metal geared. Other things to consider: 1. That motor is rated at 85A on 12s, which is a good match for the ESC. Since you're flying it on 8s at the moment, just be sure to keep your headspeed down. (If you're geared for 12s, you should be fine.) If you try to increase RPMs on 8s to get closer to a normal HS, your batteries and ESC will not like you! So, when you're ready for more speed, increase your cell count - not your pinion size. 2. Flying with a DSM2 receiver is a little riskier than DSMX. DSM2 chooses two "good" bands at initialization, while DSMX can change bands on the fly. If you fly in an isolated area, you should be fine with DSM2. If you fly in a built-up area, and at a field with a lot of other pilots, there is more risk with DSM2. The probability of a problem is low, but I personally wouldn't risk it with a heli that size. Also, you don't mention whether you have any experience flying. It sounds like at least some, so you probably have a sim; but if not, a sim would be a great next investment. I'm sure other guys will have other thoughts!

Before you fly it again.
R/C Heli Tutorial #6 Lubricants (13 min 55 sec) You need to take the helicopter apart. Wash every bearing in de greaser. Then silicone every bearing. Then re assemble. I mean everything. Main shaft out do bearings. Pull the motor and lubricate it. R/C Heli Tutorial #10 Proper Motor Maintenance (26 min 19 sec) Look over the gears, one way bearing and pinion. Lubricate them. R/C Heli Tutorial #2 Main Gear Maintenance (15 min 3 sec) Remove the head and feathering shaft. Do the bearings. Pay special attention to the thrust bearings. R/C Heli Tutorial #4 Rotor Head Assembly and Maintence Part 1 (14 min 20 sec) Take apart the tail case and do the bearings. If the tail is shaft drive remove and re lubricate the bearings If it's belt drive tail. Look the belt over. At least silicone it as shown in video. If it's cracked replace it. Lubricate everything that moves with silicone! You need to go over every nut bolt and screw with a screwdriver. or Allen key. Make sure everything is properly thread locked. It's important that you do not leave anything to chance with a big helicopter like this. Make sure the blades are balanced 100% perfect! If that was my helicopter this is where I would start. Then I'd tie any wire extensions together with thread. A helicopter that expensive needs to be treated like the space shuttle. Everything must be 100% perfect. The evening before you fly it, Give it a once over on the bench. Function everything. I know full well what I'm asking you to do. I do it with every helicopter I buy. But in the end you will learn a lot. You will know the helicopter is safe to fly.

Thanks for the pointers so far. I feel like that checklist and the links to the videos will help a lot. Looking over everything it appears that he took good care of it.
Is there any specific silicone you use or is better than other kinds? Or any brands I should avoid using? |

On larger bearings I use 20,000 weight shock oil in a vacuum bottle.
For tail case slider and other slow moving parts I use 30 - 35 weight. Depends on what looks good at the time. You can get it at an RC car shop. I do my belts as in the video. Meant to add this video as well.

Thanks for adding another video to my youtube marathon, the information is great. I just picked up most of the lubricants mentioned in the first video and am starting to work on that. I should probably add that my TRex does have a flybar and the tail rotor is shaft driven. The links on the flybar and swashplate are labeled "F3C". If you have any knowledge based on that feel free to share. I'm loving the lessons so far!

Can you tell me what your Dual rates and Expo settings are in your transmitter?
Pitch and throttle curves? How much RC helicopter flying experience do you have? What helicopters? Do you fly well, Forward flight, bank turns. Stall turns. Orientations, fly out turn around and fly back. What kind of flying are you going to be doing. Aerobatic or more scale like flying with no inverted. When you where flying the helicopter how did it feel to you. Collective - Did it feel like it over reacted to control input. Felt good, a little touchy, yes pretty scary? Cyclic - Did it feel like it over reacted to control input. Felt good, a little touchy, yes pretty scary? Feel free to PM me if you like. I work afternoons so I usually check in about noon.
