Default Stock motor failed

I was going to fly one battery in the rebuilt 300 CFX. I took off and almost immediately the 300 made a noise and started flying slightly erratically. I landed it and got it on the ground with no problem.
Then, looking it over I found that I could't turn the main gear. It is the motor. It will turn with some effort but will grind and catch at a couple of points in a rotation.
So I am looking for a replacement that fits the stock mount and frame.

Copied from other thread.....

Rob,

The stock motors are junk - very noisy and the bearings fail regularly.

I have 2 300CFXs - one with a Mystery D2627 motor MYSTERY D2627-4200 RC Helicopter Outrunner Brushless Motor $12.33 Free Shipping @GoodLuckBuy.com and the other with the Turnigy 2627. Both are much better than the stock motor (of the two I prefer the Mystery - but the Turnigy is still wayyyy beter than stock)

I run 13T pinions on each - and they give great power.

Cheers,
Mike.

I have a Lynx 300CFX Ultralight CF frame and Lynx motor mount for it...
And the stock 450X (440H) motor fits it...

Using that in My 3rd 300CFX build...

Just waiting on cyclic servos and FBL

Which servos did you buy for this build Jon? I may build a second 300CFX. I have a Lynx frame, motor, motor mount and ESC. This frame has the stretched tail. Is it necessary to use the stretched tail or can I use the Lynx frame and motor with a stock tail boom and expect good tail authority?

I still haven't received the Mystery motor. The order shows "complete" on April 8th. That's 21 days. I emailed asking Goodluckbuy. No answer yet, but I doubt there's any recourse if it never shows up. I didn't pay for tracking. Now I wish I had. it was $2.50 on a $12.33 item. Banggood only charges about $1.30 for tracking from China. I've never had a lost order from China. Maybe it will still show up.

I can see the humor in Goodluck with that Mystery Motor.

I have the stock servos on the way...KST 215MG V3 will be on the tail

Yes you can use the stock tail boom...I've never been able to find a stretch boom but I'm late to the 300 party

Thanks Jon. I had bought two stock tail booms and have an extra belt so I want to use stock parts where I can because of availability.

Guess what showed up today. Yes! Mystery Motor. One day after I sent a contact message to Goodluckbuy. It didn't come with a pinion but I got that from you Jon.

All I need to do is put the pinion on and solder bullet connectors on the motor leads before installing and testing it. I might have it done for our Wed. AM flight club. I'm also reassembling my 230S after looping it into the ground last Wed.

That's the way that it always seems to work

Well, I easily got the pinion and the bullet connectors on. The ESC and the stock motor have red, black and blue wires. The Mystery Motor has red, black and yellow. I hooked up red to red, black to black and yellow to blue.
A quick bench test with the blades off, the motor worked and rotated the correct direction.

Then I did a test flight in our front yard. It spooled up fine in the normal mode and took off normally. Then in about 20 seconds a puff of smoke came out of the canopy. Just one puff was all. There was no change in the attitude and it still responded normally to control input. I landed and looked It over. There is the smell of electrical burning if you put the motor close to your nose.
I decided to fly it again and I probably flew a total of 3 1/2 min. No problem. No smoke. Hovered and landed with no problem.
Did I hook the motor up correctly? Is it possible there was some kind of residue from manufacturing that burned off when the motor heated up. It landed hot. I could touch the motor but it was hot enough that at first you wouldn't want hold your finger on it for very long. I hope there is no major pending problem but I don't really know what else to do but fly it and see what happens.
Any ideas what could be going on?

Strange - normally if the magic smoke escapes that is terminal for something. You can connect the motor wires in any order, and just swap 2 over if it runs backwards.

It shouldn't get that hot however - I would check that the gear mesh and belt tension are not too tight.

Goodluck is a bit slow to ship, items usually take a month to come for me.

As to replacement servos, I like the KST-113s for this heli, they are nice and light and seem to be more durable than the stockers, and much more precise. I think the Emax 08MD's are another option that might fit.

Thanks Yakky. If I rebuild the second 300CFX I'll take a look at those. I have KSTs on one 450L and most survived several crashes.I still haven't gotten the first 300 to fly for more than a couple of flights before something grounds it. Well, they were free and shelved for a couple of years after crashing. Going to buddy box it with my wife today. Not sure how that will go considering the test flight a couple of days ago.

The 300CFX has been flown twice since the first flight with the Mystery Motor. Thanks, mikej! $12.33 is better than the $40 for a stock motor. I can buy 2 more and still be ahead. I flew it once on a windy day and my wife flew it (solo, no buddy box) yesterday. It's flying great now. Not sure what the one puff of smoke on the first flight was but it hasn't happened again. The motor doesn't seem hotter than other motors after a flight. So, it seems we have a solid working 300CFX now.
We still have only one battery. Time to get a couple more.
Also, it is quieter than it was with the stock motor. It may have been noisier than normal because the motor was about to fail but it's definitely quieter.
So, from a bag of parts and help from HeliFreak members we have a nice 300CFX!
I'm closer to committing to a rebuild of the second collection of parts. I have to do an inventory and figure out exactly what parts I need. New thread if I do that. Back to the future!

Excellent to hear that Rob, and thanks for the update.

It's funny, the 300CFX doesn't get much love, but of the 15-odd helis that I have (with many being much "better"), my 300CFX still gets A LOT of air-time, I love it
