Default Alternative motor option topic refresh

I'm bringing this up again because the older threads discuss upgrade motors that often can no longer be sourced. Looking for a bit more power to be able to run with a bit of headroom and use the BL governor. I presume the 300X Blade motor is still what has been termed a "POS"?

Thanks,
Ben Minor

Does this Heli have a governor ? I've read a few people have used the 300x motor and dialed down the throttle

The ESC doesn’t have the governor enabled, but it is running BLheli firmware so if you hook it up to a PC you can enable the gov.

I have gone with a slightly bigger motor from Horizon which also requires a new pinion, same tooth size but there is a step on the motor shaft so you can’t use the original. I will have to check which number motor it is but it’s from one of the fixed pitch helis. It KV is slightly higher and the can is a mm or 2 longer.

That would be nice to know. I'm currently flying the referenced "POS" motor, and I agree it is one vibrating little bitch even with bearings fixtured to the motor shaft, but the added power makes the model much more useful for learning a bit more power hungry 3D stuff, especially as the pack depletes.

The 200S motor is 80Kv higher if that is the one you are talking about:

Main Motor 3980Kv: 200 S BLH2650

I see that motor, but is it more powerful than the stock one?

Thatís a good question, the can is slightly longer and KV slightly higher. My friend did the change first and he gained significant extra power, but then I did it and donít think I gained much. Could be some variation between the motors.

You need another pinion because of the stepped shaft and you just need to re-route the ESC wires as the can is longer so you need to go out the side rather than under the motor, otherwise it is a direct fit.

I moved the esc to the side of the model with the larger motor. Not quite as pretty, but all the wiring to both motors becomes a straight-shot plug in with no concern for the front bullets off the esc getting close to the can or being forced into acute angles.

I have one 230s with a Turnigy 4200KV motor which is more powerful than stock. It fly's great but if I really bang on the pitch the tail will turn about 90 degrees before it catches up. Also on spooling up when on a smooth floor the heli with tend to turn about 90 degrees before tail authority is gained.. Also I get about a minute less duration. I bought the heli with this motor but for my flying capability and liking for smooth more big sky aerobatics I don't see this motor as necessary. Then again if you are into hard pitch pumping 3D stuff I don't see the 230 as the ideal helicopter for this type of flying.

I wish I could get that motor, but it's on perpetual backorder. The 300x motor makes good power but is a noisy, hideously balanced POS just as described by others.

I use one of my 230s just as a Sport flyer to fly fast. I would love a little more SPEED !!

Interesting as I have tried speed flying. I like to climb to a good height then roll over the top inverted and pull up to dive down pulling out level and fast but I find that the heli seems to become a little unstable in pitch with a sort of bucking motion.
