Installed pinion today and put some protective soft velcro on the frame where the wiring runs. The last baby steps of the build.

Ready for her maiden.

Default Post mortem

Doing a post mortem on my 450 SE clone today. Lost the tail in a piro, tried for an auto, then lost sight of the heli behind house. The house hit the heli. :/

The funny thing was, before flying I was thinking I ought to upgrade the rotor grips from plastic to some aluminum spares I have. The only thing broken after the hit was a plastic grip.

I hate when that happens, I have had trees come out of nowhere and just go right into the heli , not sure what the hell they were doing up there anyway.

Nada. Life has been getting in the way.

Is it like really weird though that I'm enjoying the fact that I know I will be doing the build soon?

you need to tell life that oxy build more important, and no it's not weird at all. Its why I continue to buy and build helis.

That will hopefully fly ok. Years ago I put an OS 60 or 61 fours stroke in a GMP Competitor. The gearing was all wrong and the power was low, it would hover ok and fly if the needle was set just right, too rich and no power, just a little too lean and it over heated. Find the right setting and it would fly well enough to do loops and rolls. Later Miniature Aircraft came out with a version of the Graphite 60 with proper gearing and setup to use the YS 91 heli engine. It actually flew well, for the time, with plenty of power to do aerobatics. You said you were going to spin the engine around 8000?. It might do better spun a little faster. I spin Saitos, both Fa 82s and Fa 100s much higher that that on 30% heli fuel in 3D airplane and they produce really good power and have have held up for years. One on my 82s regularly hits around 13000 in the air on a 14X4 prop and has been going strong for around 15 years. I wouldn't want to spin it that fast all the time but I doubt 10000 steady would hurt it.

I have designed a two stage gearing system to keep the rpm down. I have been testing and hovering at 40% throttle. Thanks for the tip on the rpm. I have been watching the temp very close. Still messing with ratios and I need to finish the cooling shroud.

I was making good progress on the Oxy 5 build today until I went to update the firmware in the ESC. I first tried to update the firmware in the programming box and it failed, bricking it.
Thankfully I already set up the ESC with the minimum needed to give it a go for the first time. I may just try to build in an exposed programming port so I can do the update later.

Producing a 3S 130X. Why I think I need a 3S 130X, I have no idea.

Having a go at this...

1.7m 3D printed RC powered glider/hotliner! Gonna be a long one! This first print is estimated at 30 hours, and that's the first of 7 prints...

A fellow 'freak here helped me fix my Hobbywing programmer, and I was able to check the firmware version on my ESC. It was already at the current rev, so I guess I didn't need to do any of that in the first place.

Today was extremely productive! It is pretty much ready to go except for some radio programming to make sure I have all the flight modes and rescue set up properly, then program the ikon governor and she's done!

Maidened my HK 600 GT today.
Spent the day dialing in the trim

Got it as a NOS kit for free. Can't beat that.

Default What are you working on today?

Soldered together an adapter for my discharge bank. Its the R element in the diagram.

The battery goes in the right, the bank goes below, and the charger goes on the left.

Im getting better at soldering. I no longer think of myself as sucking completely. The only thing I would have changed is to rotate the wires a little bit so that the thing lies flat.
