Default Motor for Logo 400SE / 480

Hello all,

i am just now searching a possible replacement for the Scorpion 4015 1070 to be used in my Baby-Logo (the scorpion is absolutely powerful enough - but far from cool ).

one possibility could be a Pyro 600-11... a little bit on the heavy side and a bit powerfull maybe... but who cares? is there something similar in the Egodrift-Lineup? i would like to stay in 1070(1100)kV range w/ 15T pinion, as the M0.7 pinions (esp. for 6mm shaft) are really really rare. motor weight should not exceed 200-230g range... COG is a topic on this little bird.

Ciao
Michael

I would say the 4020-1050, but would exceed your weight requirement by a bit. Ran it in my Oxy 5 for a while. Awesome power for such a small motor. Stayed very cool also.

Your only other choice would be to go to a 3220, which not sure if it would be a good match.

... yes, that's all i found too... but 4020 is too much. it's a 2kg/480 bird... 0.1kg plus is too much. 4020 is too heavy & too powerful. 3225 would be great... 3220/960 could be a little little i fear.

thx, Ciao

the only other real options i found are xnova 3225/1100 and pyro 600/11... both are a tiny bit heavier (when compared to the scorpion 4015/1070) and not really much more powerful and/or efficient. using ecalc.ch all seem to stay in the range of 88-89% in my application... the Scorpi giving the longest flying times in the end. efficiency beats power in my case - the drive train will not handle endless power and it's only a 2kg bird.

i will stay with the old motor for the moment and wait... as there is a huge fanbase out there with Logo 480 XXtreme (and still many 400SEs) maybe something new will come up in that range... either 3225 or 4015. i am in no real hurry...

thx to Ben the idea of the 4020HS would not leave my mind since days...

so i was just about to pull the trigger on the 4020HS 1050 when i remembered the real tight fit of the Scorpion 4015 in the Baby-Logo. lucky i am to have checked all again... the 4020 would not fit the frame. i had to file already a tiny bit of it for the 4015 (maybe due to M0.7 conversion, and it is anyhow a narrow fit)... no chance with a motor that is 1mm more in diameter and some 4mm higher.

Ciao

I've seen quite a few positive reports of using the 32xx class motors in the LOGO 400SE.

Being such a light heli, it doesn't need much power. and the 32xx size motors output nearly as much as a Scorpion 4015-1070, which is the motor typically used in the 400SE.

I wouldn't put one in a 480XXtreme (I'd use a 4015 or 4020 for that), but for the 400SE they seem to be a great choice, especially given that small and light 40xx class motors with a 5mm shaft are getting hard to find.

I think an EgoDrift 3220HS 960kV would be an excellent choice for the 400SE. It's lighter than a 4015, and outputs more than enough power for that heli. It's rated at nearly 1.8kW continuous power, which is very close to a 4015-1070kV.

Hi Keith,

yes, you are right, i've done the calculation and theoretically it should work... BUT using pinion 17 (today 15/138) - which is not available anymore... neither 16 which would be a compromise.

(nevertheless) i could not believe this little motor being strong enough (i would have put money on 3225 - even Align 500MX had that stator size) - knowing the 4015 is seeing peaks of 100A+ ... but seems to be really OK.

I just built a Protos 480 and while waiting to change the shaft of the spare 4020 I have, I put in an Egodrift 3220 and it is running it perfectly. Still testing it out and finding the speeds I want it set at, but have tested up to 2400rpm. The power of the motor definitely is NOT an issue. Not sure what kind of weight differences there are between the two platforms, but I think the 3220 would easily work. My 480 weighs 1389g.

yes, yes and yes i have to apologize... i know... shame on me

even the Logo is a little bit heavier... it is ~1580g (TOW +/- 2kg w/ RT480)... i am convinced now it would run... and it would be even 35g lighter than now...but there is still no pinion 17 available

@Vincent: is there a chance for a custom wind on this motor (range ~1050-1120kV) ?

Hi Michael,

I'd need to do some math with our team at the factory to figure out at which kV (+/-) the wind would come out, but making it shouldn't be a problem - send me a quick message if you're interested and I'll set everything up for you

best regards

Vincent

Hi Michael,

just this morning our team at the factory did a test wind to see where your request would end up in that range and... (drums)

We'd end up with 1100kV (1102kV, to be precise). How this Tengu 3220HS would fare in the various models and at specific gearings is something that only trying out the combinations will be able to tell

Let me know if you'd like us to build one for you, should be ready within a day.

Hope this helps and

best regards

Vincent

... even local customs authorities tried all to delay the arrival of the motor... it arrived

first impression: the motor has the perfect build quality we all are used to see when we open Egodrift boxes for the first time

second impression: this little thing is so tiny, i thought to myself immediately: this will not do weight without connectors 179g (with connectors and pinion 191g), so around 21g less compared to the Scorpion. seeing them side by side one would expect really much more difference in weight.

it fits perfect to the frame, even it looks almost a little bit lost compared to the motor before... nice - as if it was build for that heli

as i was really unsure about this tiny toy, i decided to do the first test-flight without canopy... "better cooling & quicker to check the heat". so, heatgun in the back pocket of my jeans and GO. after 1:30 minutes of smooth testing i landed to check the motor... is was afraid it could already be hot. but first finger-test showed: nothing. really nothing.

'ok, you little beast, take this'... canopy mounted and ~2:30-3:00 minutes 'fire in the air'... 54.7C directly after landing (20C outside). the Scorpi would have been much much hotter for sure.

i did not change any Esc setting for the first 2 flights... so there was no big surprise the logs showed 3-4% higher RPMs vs. the Scorpion (1070kV) in my normal flight modes. the surprise for me was that the little baby-Tengu was better holding RPMs in the higher flight modes (tic-tocs already indicated this) and max. RPM (extra flightmode) with same settings was 2400+ vs. 2280 - more than just 1100 vs 1070kV. little power-beast. now more fun on higher headspeed...

lower RPMs (1850) showed the Tengu being (really just) a little less stiff regarding RPMs... but this turned out to be good for the tail that worked even better.

during last 2 weeks i've also mounted the new Logo 480XX head and shorter main shaft as well as cf tail unit... so the little Logo now is a real up-to-date fun-bird. perfect fit with the new motor.... complete new bird

Ciao

... now after 'some' more flights it am still more than happy with the motor Egodrift built for me. it is more powerfull and more efficient...

the other day i managed to reach a motor temp of 67C with a flight of ~4:30 @ 2300rpms (outside temp 28C) with a little bit of fun. just some flights today... even not reaching 60C with a good mix of rpms and 80% emptying 3000/45C in ~6:00-6:30. can also fly 8:00-10:00 minutes now with it as it is really efficient at low rpms.

... i really can recommend this motor to everyone wanting to revive his Logo 400SE.
