Default HANGER 9 ki43 Oscar Build

Hey freaks! I have always wanted a war bird so I pulled the trigger on this Oscar. I think I'm going to airbrush the green to a darker more authentic green. Going with neaumatic retracts and Saito 90CC radial with a Meier collective exhaust. More pics to come as I put this thing together. Until then...Peace!

Got the fuselage unboxed today and it looks real good! Nothing damaged and the covering has been done well.
The 3D cockpit is somewhat impressive for a ARF!

When I decided to purchase this plane I thought I was definitely going to use electric retracts ( much easier to install). I searched around for reviews on electric gear and discovered a lot of people have trouble with electric retracts for a number of reasons. With the majority trusting air systems with their investment, that's what I landed on, pneumatic retracts.

After thinking about it at work all week. I decided to start with detailing the cockpit a little more than they did at the factory. I still need to get some black paint to finish up. But I did have some (steel color enamel paint) that I used to hilight the conduit on the walls of the cockpit.
I also made a seat back cushion out of that black foam that comes in the SAB kits.

I may leave the pilot out of the cockpit? Haven't decided yet

Got the firewall, fuel/oil proofed with 30 min epoxy thinned out with alcohol.
I decided the pilot is in. Just not the one that came with it.
Found me a new guy. He Has a head swivel option, but expensive with a HV servo. 100 without HV servo. Add 60 for the swivel option

Sorry...no new pics this week but I did get the Saito FG90 R3 ordered this weekend. It should be here on the 27TH of this month.
Also waiting for Black Friday sales to kick in. Hoping to get a good deal on a Paasche airbrush/compressor kit that I have my eye on so i can paint this thing.

The Saito FG-90R3 arrived today. I have to say I'm impressed!
Next up to order are 9 servos.
Robart, on board air pump, should be delivered tomorrow.

First thing in the manual is to install the retracts and run air lines. So I got started by cutting the covering away to do just that.
It's a good idea to keep the extra covering you gain after doing this, to help secure the edges of the covering,
that you fold into the wheel wells. The underside of the covering is an adhesive just like a decal, very sticky.

In a earlier post I mentioned that I had received a "On Board Air Pump" from Robart. I had to Return the first pump to Robart, the battery would not take a charge. They replaced it ,but the second unit also has a bad battery. It took a charge but wouldn't recharge after the first cycle. Sending it back tomorrow. Maybe I will get a good one soon. Lol

I like the landing gear to move in a scale fashion. So I'm adding a Variable Rate control valve, to slow down the operation of the retracts. Here is a pic of what comes with the kit if you buy the combo and the Robart valve

I got the MRS 90 Ring Silencer heading my way from Germany. It is shipping by boat, so it could take 4 to 6 weeks to get here. I had to try one, due to all the hype about how good they sound.

They answered all my e-mails within minutes. Its been a pleasure so far doing business with them.

Let me start off by saying, I gotta hand it to ROBART, they don't give up on support. Yeah it sucks, I had to send the On Board Air Pump back twice, before I finally got a good unit. But I'm glad they helped me get there.

So I spent the day testing and recharging the OBAP and I think it's worthy of installing into the plane.

Ok back to the retract installation. Not to bad overall. The manual tells you to cut a 19 inch peice of air line x 2. I decided to run the air lines first and then cut them at the wing root, to the proper length. This way I was sure not to come up short.

Had to Dremel a small amount of wood away, as you can see in the pic where paint is gone, to get the bolt pattern to line up. However that wasn't quite enough. Also had to open up the 4 holes a little bit on the retract mounting plate, with a 3/16 drill bit. Once that was done it bolted right up.

The MRS 90 arrived today. This thing has basically no weight to it. I was surprised how light it is.
It arrived from Germany in only 10 days!

Installing the flap and aileron went really smooth. The only thing I had to do that the manual does not mention is, shorten the length of two hinge pins for the flap. Click image for larger version

Working on mounting the gear door today. Specifically the one with the yellow stripe that mounts to the struts. This was IMO, the more difficult part of putting together the wing or landing gear. Getting the blind holes marked and drilled out accurately for the, gear door mounts, didn't go to well. I ended up ruining the door by not getting the holes dead on the first time. 60.00 dollar mistake, since I had to order another set of doors.
I redeemed myself and got it on the second attempt.
As you can see, lining up the door perfectly with the lines in the wing was not possible. You can only move the gear door mount on the strut so far. Therefore it wouldn't achieve perfection. Good enough for me

Flap and Aileron servo installation.

This is the first model I have assembled with a Servo Tester/ Programmer. I'm using, Hitec HS-5585MH servos for everything except the elevator. HS-7950TH will control the elevator.
The HFP-30 Servo Tester/Programmer is nice to use for centering servos, before assembly. And for testing operation of flight controls. Highly recommended.

The manual doesn't mention it, but I had to bend the Aileron linkage so it would clear the inside of the wing.

Normally I use the rubber bushings to mount the servos. But the predrilled hole pattern was a little to wide to line up with the bushings in. Needs a little wiggle room so I hard mounted them.

Took some time off the build, to get out and fly before it gets hot. I also took some time and built a break in stand for the FG90. It's almost ready to fire up. Anyway some pics...

Got the engine through its break in today. I love how these motors start with little to no effort, no starter needed. The MRS exhaust is worth every penny. Sounds just as good as they claim.
