I now have my rig figured out. I got an old-school ali frame backpack, so that the bag can be changed or modded, the position can be adjusted etc. The bag that came with it works pretty well but still needs to be opened up a bit for some of the taller helis. But this works very well. (the boom does not stick up quite so high when I am wearing the backpack as the bag sits lower on the frame)
