Default a curiosity

Here is a curious thing that happened to me at the field. Just something to be aware of:

I was doing the first flight of the day on my oxy 5 with a NEO. I have a vcontrol touch radio. I forgot to actually turn the radio on. I applied power to oxy 5. It started beeping and I remembered i hadn't turned the radio on. So I turned it on. Everything connected and I was ready to go. I checked servo throws and direction then backed up and turned the motor on. The heli immediately wanted to tip over to the left. Only being fast at grabbing the cyclic stick stopped disaster. I was sitting there having to "fly" the heli on the ground and also hit the motor stop switch with the same hand. I got it done and averted disaster though. Then I decided to power cycle the heli and tried again. Did that and no further problems were encountered!

I did not try again to see if I could repeat the behavior as it was very difficult to keep the heli from dumping over ... it was that extreme.

Check stick calibration is perfect, it does not matter which is powered on first, VBCt or Neo it will not initialize until a valid signal is received. If Neo is powered on without a signal for longer than 30 seconds, it will go into bind mode.

Nothing to do with stick calibration, this is something a few of us accept happens occasionally.

Mine might do it every few hundred flights, but I've not had one in a while now. Another pilot who flies much more than I do gets them as well, and is now very careful checking for swash tilt after init.

I find it's normally related to the transmitter being slow to turn on, either through it not being in sleep, or auto-on being turned off by a low battery.

I had a slightly different one on Saturday where after binding to another transmitter, it was giving left rudder and had to be restarted. Probably not related but possibly part the same occasional weirdness.
fiddle likes this.

Rainer also said to check stick calibration. Not sure how that could cause this and simple reboot of the NEO has it fine the rest of the day but I'm game... I'll look into it.
