Do I really want a "almost" .30? I don't think I do.
the Trex 550X is as big as a 50 nitro.
the Tarot 550 or XLP 550 are the two most affordable kits on that size range.
I don't take into account the Agile A5 for obvious reasons.

Thanks everyone, The decision was made.

I purchased the XL Power 550 kit. Now I need to decide on a motor, ESC, and servos. Being new to electric helis makes that no easy task. Looking at motor costs, I wish I could have gotten the XLP kit the included it, but they were sold out. t least I got a $30 discount

I don't want junk, but lower costs would help with the pucker factor!, Any suggestions?

BTW. I'm not a 3D guy. I do more sport flying - Rolls, Loops, circuits, Etc. Though I might try some easier 3d maneuvers. I wouldn't want a super fast rotor speed..

I have had very good experiences with the Align 600mx and the 730mx. Depends on what Kv you need. If you're going 6s, you could get the 1200kv 600mx, or 960Kv 730mx.

Would these fit the XLP 550? The price is right, and I see a combo with a 100A align ESC that would save some too. I was looking at the HobbyWing Platinum PRO V4 ECS

Maybe I should step up to the more expensive items, but I keep thinking they are meant for the extreme 3D guys?

I am considering KST X15-1208 servos

I have no idea what FBL system I should buy!

You'll be fine with Hobbywing, Castle, Scorpion, or Kontronic. Tthe last two being more expensive but all great performers.

My FBL of choice is iKon due to being all inclusive and very good. There's also Microbeast (no computer required on the basic version) and of course V bar, very good as well but expensive with a rather nickel dime approach. They charge you for breathing .......LOL Bavarian is also another choice. Just don't go Align 3Gx or whatever their last one was.

you really only need a 4020 motor on that heli.. its really light. no more than 1100kv. im running an 890kv with a 12t pinion at around 2000rpms and its great.

scorpion or the new yge-t esc's are nice for telemetry.
ikon2/brain 2 fbl works great with the above esc's.. pretty modern setup.

Check out the TORQ / Helidirect version (same servo with different branding and backed with a warranty from Helidirect)

I'd also recommend the Blue Bird BMS-17A rudder servo but that's kind of overkill on a 550. It's on sale at Flightcomp for $75 right now though.

Problem with all the 4020 sized motors is that they are all so expensive! Around $200

The cost of the "Extras" kinda caught me off guard. With the old .30 size Nexxus I was using $20 servos, and A $50 gyro, .30 motor was < $100. I'm a big spender on long lasting hobby stuff ( Ham radios, Gibson guitars) But hate pucker fac tor, and not a fan of high priced, high risk disposable purchases!

So I think I'll go with the KST / Torq servos, The HW v4 ESC, and the Brain 2 or Icon2.

Now just the motor is left? Any more suguestion? Do I just pony up for a $200 motor? Would anyone else recommend the align motor posted earlier? Would it fit the heli easily?

Default Returning after years- Need Help!

This could be a good option. Xnova 4020. Solid motor and fair price.

The only thing I can add that does not seem to have been mentioned is that even though autorotations might seem like a ways off, I'd still get a bird that can do it. 500+ size for that. I don't own one anymore, but the torque tube version of their 500 auto'd like a dream (downside is that the gears on the torque tube strip easily if you smack the tail). In all honesty, if I were looking for peformance/budget balance, I'd have a hard time beating the Align 550 combo kits.

And here is your motor. Xnova is top shelf.

Might have to change the shaft but they are cheap.

OK, I found another. How about -

Scorpion HKIV-4025-850KV ?

What would my head speed be using a 6S with the xl 550 gearing? It appears to have the correct shaft

I calculate somewhere around 1900 - 2000?

Looking for good flight times, and good ability to do rolls - loops etc.

i wouldnt get the hobbywing, get a esc that has reliable telemetry. get a good, modern esc.
theres a used xnova 1000kv in the classifieds.

best way to get long flight times is with the smallest motor and lower head speed. the 4025 is a nice motor, but not really needed on this heli cause its so light. the size of the motor has nothing to do with how it rolls or loops.

in this hobby, its not uncommon to cut a motor shaft to make it short enough to use in a heli.
forget what you used to use and their prices, those days are gone. but get a good esc that will carry you into the future with reliable telemetry. that way you can get the longest flight times safely with mah consumed.

align is a heavy heli and tt gears.. it has a fixed motor mount, so you cant change the gearing or really lower the head speed for longer flight times. the tail will blow out. longer tail blades will help, but weight wise, the 550x is a pig compared to the xl 550 and doesnt even compare. i had one.
