Default SAB Comet: motor options, head speed, and other considerations for a speed newbie?

I am considering purchasing a Comet as my introduction to speed helis. I have never flown speed before, so I am expecting a steep learning curve. I plan to build it as a speed heli. I already have a Kontronik Kosmik 200A ESC as well as brand new 7S LiPos for it. I am trying to figure out what motor to go with it. I am also trying to determine what head speed I should aim for as it will determine the motor pinion I will need. Also, should I use the stock SAB 720/105 blades or should I use other blades, i.e. Rail 96 tail blades?

Not knowing any better, I went with the Xnova 50XX 535kv Speed motor. I figured if it has "Speed" in the name it should be good enough for speed flying, and if it is Xnova brand it is likely to be good quality. I also ordered the 23T pinion. I'll let the Kontronik governor determine the optimal governed head speed which I anticipate will be around 2500rpm at 80% throttle and 2350 at 75% throttle.

The question remains regarding the blades. Should I stick with the stock SAB 105mm tail blades or should I go with shorter Rail 96mm blades?

I'd start with rpm 2,300 or below and pitch 13 degrees and work my way up to 16 degrees max from there, although not familiar with recommendations or limitations of the Comet. 96mm Rails on tail good idea.

OK. I'll start with the stock 21T pinion and take it from there. I'll install the stock SAB 720mm main blades, but use the shorter Rail 96mm tail blades. I'll start with a max collective pitch of +13. Thank you.

For completion, the issue with the R5 was a bad tail servo.

Coming to OHB? There is going to be a speed event on Thursday, and there will be many of the speed gurus there to chat with.

I wish. It will be very challenging to make it to OHB this year.

curious how everything went? How did the heli end up flying for you? What advice would you pass onto a person doing their first speed build.

It flew fine, but it tipped over on landing. Caused a lot of damage, and I never bothered rebuilding it.

Wait...how did it "tip"?

Were you doing an auto or something? On grass or concrete?

Landed on grass. As the blades spooled down (without power), the heli started shaking and tipped over.

Oh yeah those little skids are not good on grass. I got the retractable for my kit, but I'm thinking I should be near pavement when taking off and landing or at least hard dirt.
