Default Reviving an old vintage gasser?

I've just recently become interested in Helis again and have a couple XLpro kits coming my way. I had gotten rid of most of my old stuff, but kept my large Gasser ( Xcell Graphite 1005 Gasser It was running when l last used it, and it had low hours on it. Unfortunately it has been stored in a occasionally damp shed for the last 20 years.

I wonder it it is worth even looking at? I see parts are still available in Germany, but that can't be cheap? I wonder if the engine could be saved? I'm sure it must be frozen solid?

Still it was a beast, and had that coot 2 stroke motocross bike sound!

You have nothing to lose by trying.

I would soak the engine with penetrating oil down through the plug hole and through the carb opening.
If you could just immerse the entire engine in the penetrating oil that would be best.
I would then try heating the outside with a good, strong heat gun to make the cylinder expand.
Do this a few times over a period of days and then try gently tapping on a wrench to rotate the crank.
Slow and easy is the word. Try one direction and then reverse directions.

Patience, patience, patience.

Moved to the gasser forum. I think you'll find better support there; they're a pretty dedicated bunch.

Default Parts

You can get parts from Helidirect or direct from Miniature Aircraft in Germany. They have most of them for the 1005 there not all. Some they don't have but they have upgraded parts from other models that will fit.

As for the engine, I doubt its frozen. They are not like nitro motors. I would remove the spark plug and put oil in there, remove the carb and exhaust and put oil in those areas as well before you try to move it. That way it has oil in all locations before it rotates.

Some fresh fuel maybe on a new tank or flush the original of anything old and pump the carb several times dumping the fuel out not returning it to the fresh tank at first, you don't want to contaminate that fuel with what comes out of the carb. Then try to start it and see if you can get it to idle.

Enjoy!

Awesome! I'm going to do this. I am concerned about the carb. I know there are seal / diaphragms that could be bad. Are replacement carbs/ or rebuild kits even available? I think the motor was discontinued?

Any one else here running a 1005 or are they few and far between?

Default Yeah got a 1005 here

Maidened 9/22/97 still in service, 4501 flights to date...! Planning on making it to 5000 flights but other projects slow me down. I would like to get there as a personal goal to say I did it.

See if the carb works before you take it all apart. I mean you can take it apart, and you may need gaskets and a diaphram sure, but if you need to fix the carb better to buy another like the 1107, it runs smoother on the 1005 than any other carb I tried. Your original might be a 167a. 1107 will make more power.

Default If you buy it

From Daves, don't forget the choke lever, AV48x for it.

Hanson also has them I believe they are less than Daves, but he may not have the lever there.

Good luck and enjoy!

I was able to pull out the heli

Not good! I'll have to decide if it's worth it. Evething steel is rusted to peices, Bolts, ball link balls, muffler, etc. I assume all bearing need replacement? Is it possible to replace swash bearings?

What a mess............

Default If its really that bad

By the time you get to replace all the rusted parts maybe you would be better off buying a new gasser kit? The latest from MA is the Whiplash V2, it uses the RC engine and fly very nicely, does feel much more locked in than the 1005 does in comparison. Check Helidirect.com, here is a link for your easy reference:
