Default Coming back into the hobby after 7 yrs hiatus

Got the itch again so i just bought a new align kit (trex 450L dominator 6s) to build. also bought a used DX6 gen 2 transmitter on here today to go with it.

Last time i left off, the beastx, spirit , and IKON, and VBAR's flybarless controllers is all the rage. Is that still true today? auto level and GPS was gaining alot of momentum back then.

I want to slowly get back in with all the right gears after i get myself back into the swings of things.

Anything i missed during my time off? whats the latest craze? any new electronics i should be aware of that enhances my back into the hobby itch?

any tips for the 450L i'm building? is the ESC up to task?

Thanks a bunch.

No clones this time .... just the authentic stuff

The Mikado VBar Control Touch radio paired with a VBar Neo VLink FBL unit is arguably the #1 choice combination for RC helicopter pilots who demand top experience and are willing to pay for it. The main attribute of this combination is the seamless integration between the radio and the FBL unit.

Welcome back. I took around a 7 year hiatus too. Lots has changed since then. Last I flew I was messing with an Esky Belt CP and Blade Nano CPS. I have now added a Blade 330S, Blade 70, and Trex 300x. Did you try Power Hobby for the batteries?

The major players in the FBL world are still Mikado VBar, Brain2/iKon2, Spirit, and BeastX to some extent. Futaba has a very high end FBL that is very customizable from what I hear.

Brain/ikon and Spirit have rescue by default for free. VBar you have to pay for rescue; not sure about autolevel. Not sure about BeastX at all.

Have you tried looking if there is the same battery with a different connector? I had to cut them off and solder on what I needed before.

yes I have. If you know of any , please share the link

I can solder on new connectors if i have to. the problem i think is 6s cells are taller than the canopy can fit. I dont think the short stubby packs will fit.

If you haven't cracked open the kit yet, I'd consider selling or exchanging it for a 470LP. It's a much better heli and still well supported. Batteries and parts are plentiful. The 450 is pretty much dead.

Ikon is the best bang for the $ in FBL. Tons of support and they don't nickel and dime you for features. Spirit is also awesome.

Well I just received it yesterday and built it today. I built quite a few back in the day so it was pretty easy 2 hrs.

I would recommend buying align 470 skids, they fit well and lift the tail out of the dirt. I also extended the the vertical tail with a popsicle stick. If you don't do this you will be replacing umbrella gears. The slightest tail strike strips the gears. The esc works, but I replaced mine w/ a hobbywing 60A & program box for the governing and soft start, the stock would rotate mine 90 degrees on startup.

I had so much fun with my 450L after I got rid of that Align gyro mine came with. (I have the 1st version) I put a Spirit on it and the difference was night and day. I was at IRCHA when I got it back together again and I could not find a 450 canopy so I slapped on a 470 canopy. It is a bit bigger so if your battery is tight that might be your answer, you will need about a 1/2" spacer for the bottom of the canopy if you go that route.

You will have a blast, lots of power and does not care if it is windy.

I also burned up my stock ESC but again it was the first version so you may not have any issues.
