Running 6s on a 3s blade 360 fusion.
I have a 6s motor and a hobbywing platinum 60a to try 6s on my 360 3s version. But it will be mainly flown with 3s
My question is since the esc supports active freewheeling, couldn't I technically run a 6s battery on the 3s motor, but run the throttle curve at 50% to mimic 100% of 3s power? Instead of having to swap the motor out every time I want to run a different battery, and if I wanted to maybe try a 4s run it at 75%? |

No, the ESC works by switching power on and off at a very high frequency. The current that flows during the time that the switch is 'on' is the full 'wide open throttle' current. so the ESC needs to be rated for full 'wide open throttle' condition.
If you use a 3s motor withe a 6s battery the wide open throttle current will be sky high and will probably burn the ESC.

The only practical 'fast' switches you can real do are :
- lipo capacity changes ( to save lipo weight) - run higher cell motor on lower amount of cell, provided you also lower your rpm. So for occasional low rpm flying (lower the cell count) |

Think of what you are asking the ESC to do in this situation. Full battery voltage is always going to the ESC, so at 50%PWM you are asking the ESC to switch on/off in a way that cuts the voltage in half seen by the electronics to slow the RPM. The "off" cycle is just as long as the on cycle is in this case which is not good. Cut the voltage in half and the current doubles. The next step may be blown caps and a burned ESC, especially if flying in such a way to cause high current spikes to begin with. Its typically done the other way around, where you run a 3S pack at 100% throttle for low head speed flying on a 6S equipped model
